Curious about whether Touro features its Jewishness in student recruiting

I noted a help wanted ad for Touro in a trade publication (looking for a Director of Institutional Research) and was a little surprised to see how much they feature their Jewishness, since I had not been aware that they do this when recruiting students. Perhaps they do. Perhaps Touro students or applicants will comment.

The ad starts out, "Touro...is a Jewish-sponsored independent institution..." and goes on to explain that their mission "is to provide quality education...in concert with the Judaic commitment to social justice..."

Since many Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, Catholic, Buddhist, Islamic (etc.) sponsored schools feature that fact, and presumably attract students and staff of that persuasion, I wonder if Touro is filling a unique marketing niche -- unless, of course, it is not featured in their student literature.

    No big deal. Just wondering.

Not at all. The only reference to the Jewish faith is in the school's historical background information, which is posted above. And it is done in a "non-preachy" way, which I find quite refreshing these days.

Jews in general are not "preachy", at least toward non-Jews because God does not require all of humanity to become Jewish. There is no duty to "preach unto all nations". There is no Jewish equivalent to the Christian notion of "salvation".

That is not to say that Jews aren't preachy to EACH OTHER. Oh, no! Far from it! Everything from "support the Israeli Settler Movement" to "Light Shabbat Candles and Bind T'fillin" from the Lubavichers. It's an endless stream, I assure you.

Was the ad for TUI or for Touro College? Fordham University has much a Catholic-if-that's-your-bag approach to education and Touro College seems to be in the same mold. Not a Yeshiva but a Jewish-on-more-than-Saturday approach to education.

TUI, on the other hand, is on the other hand.

I've noted several Touro University ads of this sort in the Chronicle of Higher Education. The current one (and I confess I didn't even know about this branch before) is for Touro University (Nevada), which, among other things, puts them in the bailiwick of a third accreditor.

And don't forget Московский университет Туро; the oldest American university in Russia (since 1991).

    I suspect a Brighton Beach connection. :)

Better than that, I can copy and paste.

    Interesting that Touro becomes Typo.

Interesting. So we now have TUI and Touro University both branch campuses of Touro College and, as John points out, under the jurisdiction of three seperate accreditors. That must be fun! I do like the name Touro University better than TUI.

Touro College has offered a masters degree in Jewish Studies for some time. Included in that were many courses offered at a Touro center in Jerusalem.

Well, it seems that the Touro Jerusalem center has recently spun off into a separate institution with Israeli accreditation called Machon Lander.

So it looks to me like Touro is breeding like cockroaches, leaving offspring everywhere. Even before they had their California operation in Vallejo fully operational and accredited by WASC, TUCOM there was already budding off a new college of osteopathic medicine in Las Vegas.

Touro really seems to be pushing the envelope as hard as they can, changing from a small New York college into some kind of worldwide educational empire in the space of just a few years. But it's worked so far and they haven't had their fingers burned yet. They make me nervous though.

I don't think they're accredited; I think they award TUI diplomas.

What's so funny about Brighton Beach connection? I mean, it's more than feasible that some Brighton people are involved; I heard at least some immigrants perceive TC as "Russian Jewish" school (probably because of some Brighton connection or operation). Brighton Beach is the biggest Russian Jewish place outside of Israel.

    P. S. I really should check before I post. They do award TUI diplomas, but they're also accredited on their own. Not just licensed like IUFS :)

    From the website:

I assume that means they have standard Russian accreditation.

What's funny about a Brighton Beach connection? That is just an allusion to a general impression of the Russian expatriate community engaging in financial activities that are outside the norm.
