Today's San Francisco Chronicle reports on a major scandal at the prestigious James Beard Foundation in New York. The man in charge, one Len Pickell, is awaiting sentencing having been convicted of grand larceny for looting hundreds of thousands of dollars from the foundation. He was hired, the article says, in part on the basis of his MBA and his CPA credential. Turns out he had neither, and no one checked.

(We also learn that Beard weighed 400 pounds, walked around his house naked, and had a mirror on the ceiling above his bed.)

When are the corporations, non-profits, schools, governmental agencies, etc. going to make it a standard practice to verify all academic credentials of job applicants ? If the employers did their due diligence, much of the academic fraud in its various forms would be greatly reduced. After all, what good is a phony diploma if the only benefit to the buyer is to hang it on the wall?
