Even though I firmly believed voting irregularities ocurred in the 2004 Washington governor's race and the Republican Dino Rossi should be governor, I think his month's of appealing the results needs to come to an end.

It now appears the GOP will be heard. Sometimes, we just need to let things go for the good of the (country, state, city, etc.). Besides, Christine Gregoire hasn't been a bad governor.

I think when you have not just innuendo or theory or speculation, but real honest-to-goodness Dalyesque, Johnsonesque fraud, such as more people voting in a given precinct that registered voters, it's hard for people to let go. There was at least a question about the results in Florida in 2000, but here, there's no doubt: the new governor was aided by fraud and almost certainly would not have prevailed but for it. It wasn't just a court stepping in and stopping a recount, it was real fraud in heavily Democratic precincts. That's indisputable. And that's why people are having trouble letting go.

This is more like the rank fraud of Hayes-Tilden than the controversy of Bush-Gore.

    Jimmy,

I've been a flaming leftist most of my life. Having voted in all seven presidential elections that I was qualified to vote in, I've voted for three Democrats, three Socialists, and even one Republican (decades ago). Trust me, as a former Washingtonian of fifteen years, Christine Gregoire is not what I would call a "good Democrat." Remember that she was the state attorney general who participated in the great tobacco hold-up. And Democrats wonder why they can't succeed in the solid South. She's nothing more than a hypocritical "I know what's best for your own good" pseudo-liberal who will undoubtedly drive business out of Washington state. - Ted.

Just because we have a Republican pseudo-president who stole two elections does not mean that we Democrats should stoop to their level and start installing Democratic pseudo-governors by use of voter fraud.

Who are you accusing of fraud in the Hayes-Tilden election of 1876? You don't think that the voter fraud in those elections had anything to do with the Southern Democrats and the KKK denying black men their right to vote?

Well our president didn't steal these last two elections; I'd like you to give me credible evidence thereof, particularly in the last election. Come on, do you really think he stole Ohio? Ted, you don't just steal 100,000+ votes, you know that.

As for Hayes-Tilden, you had three states--including Florida--where both Dem and Rep electors claimed victory and tried to show up to have their votes counted. The election went to the House, who voted strictly along party lines to award Hayes every single elector in every single state. There was also some back room deal-making going on which led to the withdrawal of Union troops--a quid pro quo to the outraged South, which had supported Tilden--which actually did do some protecting of black's rights, and the end of the Reconstruction Era.

It was the beginning of the end for black civil rights, which were actually somewhat protected and the start of an ugly period of Jim Crow, which was later rubber stamped by an activist court in Plessey. Ugly business. That Hayes-Tilden election deal cost freed slaves and their children, grandchildren dearly.

    I don't know that I've ever met a GOOD Democrat.:D

But from your description, she sounds like a TYPICAL Democrat.

Well, even though I have a political science degree, I'm becoming extremely disgusted with politics. I've come to the conclusion that there's the Republican bag of shyte and there's the Democratic bag of shyte and one has to whiff through a lot of shyte to find a little shinola. Which bag has more shinola is up to each individual to decide for himself/herself (if he/she is willing to whiff through it all). - Ted.

Politics is derived from two words: "poli" meaning "many" and "tics" meaning "blood-sucking insects."

This is very funny. Very clever!

For those who don't actually know, the word comes from the Greek and means "citizen" (poltikos) or "city" (polis).

This sequence of events set back social progress and race relations in the U.S. by about 100 years. Following Reconstruction, there wouldn't be another black elected to the U.S. Senate until 1992. Too many people fail to recognize the long-term negative consequences of the North giving up on Reconstruction.

The last 100+ years of strife over civil rights issues could largely have been avoided if Reconstruction had continued for another generation or so. Most of the issues would have been resolved or simply become non-issues had the clock not been set back so forcefully and harshly by white Southerners with the acquiescence of apathetic and war-weary Northerners.

I guess I am not understanding your point. There was clear voter fraud that caused the Governor's postion to be awarded to the losing candidate. I would be upset if the Republicans didn't cary this through to the end. I would hope both Republicans and Democrats would feel the same way.
