    Announced today at Edmedia Wire:

    http://www.emediawire.com/releases/2005/4/emw224208.htm

USIS, a nationwide leader in employment background screening, offers DipScan, a product that compares the educational institution listed by the applicant or employee against a database of non-GAAP (Generally Accepted Accrediting Principles) establishments. A “hit” from DipScan indicates the need to research the legitimacy of the school and whether any degree claimed meets the requirements for employment. USIS will then research the facility to determine whether it should be considered a degree mill, a legitimate school or something in between.

DipScan is the first and only product of its kind that contains a comprehensive list of diploma mills that will continue to be updated on a regular basis.

    Cheers,

    George

Very informative post! Thanks a million, George!

    Wow! Could it be happening?

Incremental, even minuscule and minute progress is being made towards the development and full-blown implementation of a widely-available illegitimate-unaccredited/diploma-mill uncovering database for employment purposes and security clearances?

Over and above the existence of the current and very useful CHEA database, another tool for separating the wheat from the chaff is in the works?

    Nah! No way.

Don't tell me that it is true that tucked away in EACH AND EVERY diploma mill and unaccredited degree out there, is that ticking time bomb, guaranteed to go off someday, sometime, somewhere during the lifetime of the fake degree holder's lifetime!

    LOL!

    Thanks.

My understanding is that the term 'GAAP' was coined by John Bear (inspired by the accounting principles) and has mostly been employed right here on Degreeinfo. So, do any Degreeinfo participants have anything to do with this?

I'm a little concerned about how this product defines what are and aren't GAAP schools.

The obvious danger is the possibility that it might verify the legitimacy of some pretty doubtful schools, if those schools score an off-shore ministry approval somewhere and maybe a listing in a book. Beating 'GAAP' is the new frontier of degree-mill science, after all.

Here on Degreeinfo, we have been all over this issue in hundreds, even thousands of posts. I don't think that a satisfactory solution to the problem of verifying international mystery schools has ever been reached. I don't think that a solution even exists at this point.

So any cool new database product is going to include some built-in questions.

    It is my understanding that:

    a. John first heard about GAAP at an ACCRAO meeting some years ago (but can certainly be credited with popularizing the term); and

    b. John does consulting work for them (although I do not know if this is his work).
