"But some people still believe women should not go outside the house. There is a saying that the only time women should leave the home is when they go to the grave. ... Estimates for 1999 put Afghanistan's male literacy rate at 51%. For women the figure was 21%." Looks like they still have a lot of progress to make ... but at least they are slowly going in the right direction.
Re: So where's the problem? who else should go grocery shopping ... jk! .. please don't tell my wife I said that .. or else I'll be out on the couch again ...
Gosh. If a woman is only to leave the house to go to the grave, how then do we transfer her from the house of her father to the house of her husband?
Marina Nawabi, supported by her family, continued her education in secret, and after completing her own studies, taught in secret while in jeopardy of punishment from the Taleban. Now she is a university student and a policy officer for a charity that promotes education and health in Afganistan. I think this is a pretty inspirational story. After reading about her I am all the more grateful for the many opportunities that I've been blessed with.
