Dr. Lois C. Richardson Appointed Dean of School of Arts and Sciences at Thomas Edison State College

Trenton, N.J.—Dr. Lois C. Richardson of West Orange, N.J., has been appointed dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Thomas Edison State College.

Richardson comes to the College as a result of a comprehensive restructuring of its Division of Academic Affairs and will provide leadership for the newly created school. The College’s academic programs have been reorganized into seven schools, each falling under the stewardship of a dean. The remaining new schools are: the School of Applied Science and Technology; the School of Business and Management; the School of Nursing; the School of Professional and Continuing Studies; the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences; and the Graduate School.

The School of Arts and Sciences administers one graduate and three undergraduate degree programs: the Associate in Arts; the Associate in Science in Natural Sciences and Mathematics; the Bachelor of Arts; and the Master of Arts in Professional Studies. Students may choose from more than 14 areas of study, including communications, music, theater arts, biology and mathematics.

“This academic restructuring allows us to position the School of Arts and Sciences as a leader in meeting the educational and professional needs of midcareer adults,” said William J. Seaton, vice president and provost at Thomas Edison State College. “Educational offerings in the traditional liberal arts and natural science areas will be increased, providing our students with the tools they need to compete in the 21st century workforce.”

In making the announcement, Seaton said, “Lois Richardson brings exceptional experience as an educator, administrator and as an innovator. We look forward to working with Lois to enhance educational opportunities for our students.”

In her new position at the College, Richardson will oversee curriculum development at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. She will recruit and lead a cadre of subject-matter experts who will function as mentors for the School of Arts and Sciences. She will be responsible for the development of learning outcomes assessment and will establish relationships with corporations and other organizations for which Thomas Edison State College educational programs and services are appropriate.

Richardson comes to Thomas Edison State College after a 24-year career at Kean University, Union, N.J., where she held several senior-level administration positions. Most recently the assistant vice president for academic affairs, Richardson established the university’s Center for International Studies and Programs. As director of the university’s Human Relations and Counseling Center (HRCC), Richardson was responsible for administrative supervision, faculty training and served as a student advisor. Richardson also served as special assistant to the president. Furthermore, she was an American Council on education fellow during the 1995-1996 academic year.

Richardson holds a doctoral degree in counseling psychology from Seton Hall University, South Orange, N.J.; a master’s in counseling and education from Teachers College Columbia University, New York; and a baccalaureate degree (cum laude) in psychology from Fisk University, Nashville, Tenn.
