I agree. It is nice to see the Mexican government doing something to protect its citizens.

If you lived here on the border, you would know how many illegal immigrants die in the attempt, are betrayed by their smugglers, are sold into virtual slavery, sexual and otherwise...advice to stay safe is badly needed. These people will continue to come as long as there's work.

If we want to DO something about illegal immigration, we need to start imprisoning the agribusiness employers for hiring them.

Fat chance. We WANT their labor and we BENEFIT from their illegal (and therefore cheap labor) status.

Do YOU want to harvest lettuce for $3.00 an hour and no benefits?

President Bush is right on this one. We need to legalize this trade.

If all that this pamphlet did was advise border-crossers about how to avoid dehydration and other dangerous desert conditions, there might arguably be some humanitarian justification for it.

But my understanding is that it goes well beyond that, advising them about how to avoid the US border patrol and about how to work the system if caught.

That's simply the Mexican government openly and brazenly advising its own citizens on how to violate American law.

I don't expect to see any American response though. We have to have our cheap produce after all, even at the cost of losing our own country and eventually becoming foreigners in our own land.

It is Wild What We Put Up With

I'm from Arizona. Hopefully, proposition 200 will be the start of Americans saying no to this nonsense. Mexico could CARE LESS about US laws. Hell, they still teach their kids that california, arizona, new mexico, and texas are still part of Mexico. This is a country who has two major exports: its citizens and drugs. Fill in the blanks. And we should turn a blind eye and prop up such a corrupt government. Hey, if Mexico's citizens want jobs, why doesn't MEXICO hire them? Why doesn't MEXICO educate it's citizens? Why doesn't MEXICO provide health care to its citizens? I say lets do what Mexico does to illegals entering Mexico from the south.

Q: And whom do you suppose is the largest consumer of both these exports?

A: If you answered "The United States of America", then you win the prize. Breakfast at Taco Bell.

    See you in Old Mexico!

Any economist will tell you that the existance of a large pool of cheap labor on ONE side of the border and a continuing need for cheap labor on THE OTHER side of the border WILL result in migration, legal or otherwise. There's virtually NOTHING that will stop it; that is the power of the "invisible hand".

Just LOOK at how much progress we've made in the War on Drugs! (Try "None")

So again I say President Bush is correct on this one.

The Iron and Bamboo Curtains worked.

    Retrogress, perhaps.

I agree with 'cogent' that the problem is in Mexico. If Bush is not addressing that reality then he cannot be more than partially correct.

The Iron and Bamboo Curtains worked, more or less, because the communist regimes carried out literally millions of acts of murder and torture to enforce their vicious (and stupid) wills. Note that finally the USSR communist systems collapsed and that the Chinese have abandoned Marxism as a practical matter. So I really don't see that these are exceptions.

Free trade under NAFTA has seriously damaged the Mexican middle class, IMHO. But free movement of labor would do much to redress that evil.

The FT made stand for free trade but the act is controlled trade.

My guess is that the Mexican middle class is doing just fine. The people fleeing Mexico for the US are poor and Indio.

The freeing of the Mexican economy would do everything to redress the evils of Mexican statism.

The big difference is that the Iron and Bamboo Curtains were designed to enslave people and keep them inside the country. The US Border Patrol is trying to defend our borders against criminals.

One of the biggest-selling books from Loompanics (an American publisher) for many years was called:

"How Dishonest People Rig Their Electric Meters to Cheat the Power Companies."

Detailed instructions and diagrams on exactly what those dishonest people do.

Perhaps the Mexican manual should have been called, "How Despicable, Reprehensible Mexican Citizens Illegally Enter the US, Evade the Border Patrol, and What They Do When Caught." Complete with maps, diagrams, and Tony Serra's phone number.

I've for some years owed Mr. Hoy $1.00. The price on a book had increased from that in the catalog I had but he mailed me the book anyway.

Vicente Fox hasn't the same legal concerns as Michael Hoy.
