I think that's because these are German names that originally derived from vocations. Germanic languages typically denote workers by work + er. In English we have names like Baker, Carpenter, Singer and Farmer. Other vocationally derived names include Smith, Shepherd and Clark (from clerk and even earlier, cleric). I think that Eisenhower means ironworker in German.
