I wear earrings and was wondering how people felt about guys wearing earrings. I have both ears pierced, and have been told that they look good on me. Most people say that so long as you do it in good taste and keep it professional, then it should not be a bad thing. What do you think of guys wearing earrings? Do you wear earrings (guys)? If so, what made you get earrings>

I like them and feel that they are cool to have. In fact, I would rather be around people that wear earrings, because they seem to be more honest and just themselves. Whatever your feelings, please be willing to share.

In all honesty,I think that they make the person look ridiculous, especially for 40-50 yo guys that try to "look young".
Depending on the general mannerism of the person wearing them, it tends to send the wrong message if you catch my drift.
Many people wear them to be cool, and like you said, it does look ok on certain people... but I would never be caught wearing any. Just my $0.02 :)

So you've devoted 50% of your posts to earrings. I'm impressed.

I do agree that there are some guys that look really sexy with earrings and others that it doesn't look so appealing on. There is just some guys that really stand out when you notice them with earrings.

To me, it would be a personal issue for the guy, whether or not he wanted to wear earrings. The hard part would be those people that give judgments about it or if you have to try and convince your parents. That would be hard. That is my view.

The very talented man who has done most of the covers for Bears' Guides (and other Ten Speed books) in recent years, has both a nose ring and earrings (and, for special occasions, a gold chain connecting them). He also happens to be an Assemblies of God minister. Wonder what his congregation thinks?

Maybe it's me, but I always thought earrings were for girls!

"The earrings your SONS are wearing," Exodus 32:2. I always thought pants were just for guys:D

Bill, good point, but none of my sons wear earrings!

And as far as pants are concerned, they were just for guys, but things do change.

Does this mean guys should wear dresses?:D

Back in the 70s a guy came to work once a year in a kilt (on St. Andrews Day).

Seriously wearing ear-rings depends on the situation. For most work situations (especially interviews and customer meetings) do not wear them.

Maintaining an appearance similar to your manager is usually a good strategy.

I disagree. I think that earrings look sexy on some guys and again it depends on who is wearing them. Take for example, someone like Justin Timberlake, Aaron Carter, or Usher, and you will notice that these guys look very good and sexy in earrings. So, agian, much depens on who is wearing them. It is just like anything else. There are some employers, (people who are managers - younger) who would only hire guys that wear earrings, while the employers (older managers) would probably not like someone wearing earrings. However, I think it is a new trend and it should be encouraged. The only thing that is a problem is tongue piercings, and nose piercings. That might cause some problems.

I have my left ear pierced and I always wear a rather conservative silver hoop or a small diamond stud. I think it looks good on me but I have to take it out when I teach. It violates the instructor dress code.

Is there anyway you could fight them on the dress code? It seems kind of foolish that they would fight over one earring. Any reason why you don't have your other ear pierced? Just curious.

I suppose I could push the dress code issue, but I'd really like to continue being invited to accept teaching assignments and I don't consider it all that much of a nuisance to have to remove it.

As to why I only have one ear pierced, it's a personal preference. I think it looks better on me having only one.

Thanks for your answer. By the way, how were your parents with you having your ears pierced? How were your friends with you having an earring? Just curious.

I don't think anyone said much about it at all. The reactions I got were similar to the responses I would get from a new hair cut. I don't think a simple earring is considered quite as invasive as an eyebrow or a lip, either of which I'm sure would have caused my family alarm. :)

Back where I'm from, there's this saying "LEFT is RIGHT and RIGHT is WRONG".... I think the meaning is if a guy has a piercing in his left ear that means he is "straight" (and therefore "OK"), and in the right ear means he is "gay" (and therefore "not OK"). Both ears seem to imply a certain ambiguity towards one's own sexuality?

Not sure - this is all just urban folklore as far as I'm concerned! Where I live now I see it all.... earrings, leather, guy on guy (in restaurants), ladies throwing themselves at anyone and everyone, etc. Of course this wonderful place is called South Florida.... One old guy in a bar told me when I first moved here, and was expressing my wonderment at the culture shift - "Ah get used to it! There's nothin' here but fruits, nuts, and sluts, in that order!" ;)

Only when playing counter strike.... :D

I used to wear an earing (just one) but no longer do. I quit wearing it after my grandmother (who was dying) requested I no longer wear one. After she passed away I never bothered to put it back in. My best friend wears about 3 of them in one ear. Of course he also has long hair, and looks Puerto Rican, though he is of Philipino descent. He has never really had a problem finding work because of them either

I would imagine (as long as you are buff) women would love it as it shows you are a little extreme and not boring.

As for me, as a male, I think it gives the impression that the man is unprofessinal, none serious, and immature.

I'd say ditching them would be a pretty good idea unless you run your own business and/or don't care what other people generally think.

I don't mind male earrings although I find lip, tongue, and eyebrow piercings to be distracting and nose rings to be gross.

    Men seldom make passes
    At girls who wear glasses.

    Seldom endearing
    Are men with an earring.
