I studied under a professor, Malcolm Bean, who received his doctorate from Manchester. His credentials always simply stated "University of Manchester," and of course I have long been aware of the Manchester University Press.

I had never heard of the Victoria University of Manchester until now, but if I had, I would have thought it was another university entirely. I have never encountered any designation but the "University of Manchester."

I suppose David Hume was right. Experience is not only our greatest teacher but a source of profound human ignorance.

Good luck to the "new" University of Manchester. Although, it is not clear to me exactly what they mean by becoming competitive with Oxford and Cambridge.

Grabbing a bigger share of the available pot of government research funding ;-)

Manchester and UMIST have always done OK when it comes to getting research funding, but the combined entity is still dwarfed when it comes to the amount of funding they pull in from HEFCE. They hope that they're finally going to produce a northern institution with enough clout and research skills to challenge "the Golden Triangle" of Oxford, Cambridge and London.

Figures for funding for the coming year are available via The Guardian at http://education.guardian.co.uk/administration/table/0,9861,1161034,00.html
In particular, you'll note the amount of research funding that Oxford, Cambridge, UCL and Imperial manage to grab between them.

... and now headed by Professor Alan Gilbert, the immediate past head [Vice Chancellor] of the University of Melbourne and Universetas 21. The offer made to him apparently was too good to refuse ... maybe they will have a 'Manchester Private' University soon?
