I was wondering what route would best prepare me for a teaching position in the future.

Earn 18 grad credits in English to teach English lit, (combined with my masters)or
Complete the PhD in Business / MIS

I am a bit confused – if I complete the PhD, will I only be qualified to teach whatever I earn 18 grad credits in which would be MIS?

    Help..

What are you planning to teach, and at what level?

    Some questions:

What Masters do you have or are getting?
What do you want to teach?
What level do you want to teach (High School, Community College, University)?
What is your concern, being pigeon holed or making a choice in subject matter you may not like in 10-15 years?

The two choices, English Lit or Business/MIS are fairly different from each other.

Hi Randell - I don't want to oversimplify the situation but it seems to me that it depends, to a large extent, on what specifically you want to teach. Your signature line indicates your degrees but not the academic area for each. Do you want to teach English. With your credentials you might not have to have a degree in English or English Lit. Perhaps just the credits would do. In that case, you could just knock off a few courses and you'd be all set.

My concentrations are technology and business. I only have 6 undergrad credits in lit (Analyzing and Interrupting Lit exam). I would need to earn another 6 credits to get into the MLS program at FHSU. My masters is in Information Technology Mgt.

I have a background in IT/MIS so I can teach that. I enjoy lit so I think I would enjoy that. I need to teach online classes at a CC or university.

I feel I can go for either subject, I just want something that will open the most doors.

You obviously have credits enough to teach in the Tech/IT field. If you want to teach Lit, just take some courses. You don't have to enroll in a degree program, do you? You could do four courses in a year. Then you're in. Good luck,

I have applied for a teaching position at about 8 schools and never got a call back. I think the PhD could help.

For the lit option, I was going to take the English classes that are part of the MLS program at FHSU without taking the 10 core credits. I still need to apply and be accepted into the program to take the classes.
