Bad system, but often good people As reprehensible as the system from which they come may be, Cuban doctors have been stationed throughout the West Indies for some time and have a good reputation. In addition, West Indians often go to Cuba for university, since Cuba provides a number of scholarships to each island that cover all expenses. I have not observed that those students have returned with any particular ideological change from their experience, nor have the Cuban doctors I've met had anything ideological to say -- they seem more concerned with healing the sick and all that. -=Steve=-
The training is excellent, however, they tend to return with an appreciation for, and indulgence in anal sex (heterosexuals), as this is generally accepted in Cuba and some Latin American countries as a form of birth control. I have heard local women complaining about it.
TMI What locality? I haven't heard that from women in Dominica, but then I suppose I haven't really asked. "So, those guys who study in Cuba, when they come back do they, uh..." Uh-uh. -=Steve=-
Funny, I lived in Ukraine for 23 out of 25 years of my life and never heard it. Are you, like, 100 years old? Stalin was dead since 1953.
Interestingly, Cuba has a strong biotechnology industry. The federal government recently granted an exception to the trade embargo to allow a U.S. biotech. company to license Cuban inventions. See Carlsbad firm set to test cancer drugs from Cuba. Hopefully no unpleasant habits came with the technology transfer.
