I had posed this question in the middle of a different thread, and I guess it didn't get noticed, so I thought I'd ask again. Why aren't registered users allowed to use avatars at DegreeInfo? Cheers, Adrienne
No one asked me (either), but I think it would be fun. John Bear Nosce te ipsum . . . but Ne fronti crede
I'm not at all a tech person, but I'm not sure if this type of board will support avatars. I agree that it would be fun, though.
There's a button for Change Avatar on the User CP page under Edit Options. Clicking on it yields "The administrator has disabled the use of avatars." uncle janko - an avatar is a small picture that would appear under your user name on your posts.
I seldom play computer games, but I understand that some of them let you select a character who will represent you in the game, and depending on the capabilities of the game, your avatar will do all kinds of nasty things to the other player's avatars. So it seems to me that putting a picture under posts is a rather pale imitation of an avatar. Thinking about the nasty things that avatars do, plus seeing John Bear's endorsement of avatars, reminds me of a neighbor who warned me this week that there are indeed black bears in my neighborhood
Ashton: "...that there are indeed black bears in my neighborhood." John: At our summer dance camp in the Sierras (Kings Canyon), there were so many bears in the vicinity, we were told we couldn't make 'smores at the campfire. There is still the splendid warning posted at the camp: "Warning: Black and Grizzly Bears have been seen in this area. For your protection, carry pepper spray and sew little bells on your clothing. Since Black bears are more dangerous, it is important to know which kind is in your vicinity. You can tell from their droppings. The scat of Grizzly Bears contains nuts and berries. The scat of Black Bears contains little bells and empty pepper spray cans."
The Grizzly bears are the dangerous ones. They say that if you are alone you should never run from a bear -- running will trigger a predatory chase instinct. But if you're in a group it's OK to run -- you don't need to outrun the bear, you just need to outrun the slowest member of your group.
Hi Tom, I think dcv was referring more to a 'yes' or 'no' sort of reply. At least, that's what I meant when I said that I keep hoping! Of course, if it's a 'no', it's still kinda fun imagining what some of the members of this board would choose for their avatar.
dcv: Does the original question of this thread not merit an administrative reply? John: I'd think so. But then I've been waiting more than 2 years for a useful response as to why my former colleague John Walsh (or, it seems, anyone else there) is unable to post here from Norfolk Island.
