I have applied to about eight schools for online adjunct positions and one has contacted me and said that they only hire PhD's.

I never heard from the other schools. Any advice? Maybe my resume is wrong. I could really use some help. Thanks.

I wonder if you would be willing to share which one only hires Ph.D.s. Eventually I would like to teach some online classes, but I am never going to earn a doctorate.

I've taught DL courses based on my master's degree, but they have not been online.

If your subject is Business, the PhD is about the minimum qualification for online teaching. If your subject is more technical like IT or accounting, you can some offers with your master's degree. Here is a list of schools that are always looking for new blood:

    -Jones International University
    -University of Phoenix
    -Cardean University
    -Ellis college
    -Capella University
    -Walden
    -North Central
    -American intercontinental

I recently saw an ad from UMUC looking for adjuncts. I didn't pay attention to requirements or the fields for which they're recruiting.

I receive half a dozen unsolicited resumes a week and we're fairly small with @ 400 students. Many schools, ours included, have a backlog of eligible faculty so new resumes must be quite remarkable to be considered. I have not used, but have read about a site where you can post your resume: www.facultyfinder.com You might put it there, but again I suspect uniqueness will mean the difference between getting a call and not. To the extent that you can get some teaching experience in, on-ground or online, that might help, so look at your local community colleges as well.

    Good luck,

    Also check out http://www.adjunctnation.com/.

I think Mary has hit the nail on the head. I have a PhD from a top 10 school and 17 years of industrial experience (15 of them with one of the leading companies in my field). But I still had some difficulty in getting any school interested -- until I found a program where my unique knowledge and background matched a specific need.

This thread got me thinking about the excess of people looking for positions as adjuncts. There are a lot of people who want to "give back" to their professions, despite the low pay that adjuncts receive. I think this excess is why we often see well-qualified and well-meaning people appearing in the faculty lists of degree mills.

I have not plans of giving up my "day job". This is just some extra income and I love to teach.

    Randell,

I see that your degrees are very recent. Schools normally look for at least few years of post-master's experience before they would even consider you. I would try first local colleges before trying to get into online teaching since most of the online colleges look for some teaching experience. I got my first gig at a local university after 4 years of post-master experience.

This is not my experience. I waited about a year before I got accepted to teach at my local university. I think there was one DL school who required 2 years after degree award before teaching, but I can't hink of who it was, since it was rare in my experience. As most schools, they like experience, but it is just itming in my experience.
