Sad news for the music industry. While no Sam Cook or Marvin Gaye, he will be missed as a giant in the field.

I'll say one thing for him, he did the best version of "America The Beautiful" that I ever heard.

I guess he and Regan will be keeping company. Didn't he sing for him or something and one of these "whitehouse at Christmas" specials?????????

"Nothing got him down!" could be his epitaph.

I loved the story he told, on Leno or Letterman, that he had taken up golf, and was issuing a challenge to Tiger Woods for a no-handicap match game for a million bucks, as long as he could name the time and place. Woods was goaded into accepting, and Charles said, "Old Saint Andrews. Next Tuesday. Midnight."

I agree he did it better than anyone else except Elvis. A recently discovered recording of him singing the song is absolutely haunting!

John: I guess the last widow of a Confederate soldier doesn't count, huh? According to Time, Alberta Martin married an 81-year-old veteran when she was 20. When he died 4 years later, she married his grandson. She died this week at 97.

This is a tragic loss for all of us. A truly inspirational man who overcame many obstacles in his life and always had a smile.

Thanks for bringing some sunshine into our lives. :)
