    Well, even as Republican, I have to say it might be a bit early to add George Bush to the list. Time will tell the story of his presidency. I'm a Bush supporter, but in fairness, I believe 3 years isn't enough to classify one as an all-time great. Ole Ron on the other hand....he's proven his metal to me!!!

    I would put the best Presidents as:

    1. Jefferson
    2. Roosevelt
    3. Reagan

    I would put the do-nothing Presidents as:

    1. Ike
    2. Coolage
    3. Ford

    I would put the worst Presidents as:

    1. Nixon
    2. Grant
    3. Dubya

    And I am a Libertarian. Reagan was a great communicator and a even better delegator. He wasn't the sharpest President, but he had something that most President's, including our current office holder, a clear vision. What he accomplished was great. Anyone who were adults during the late 70's and early 80's era of 16% mortgage rates would agree.

    Good night Mr. Reagan. No matter what people thought of you, you certainly contributed more than you have taken away. That is all we can ask of our leaders.

    No offense, but you forgot ,

    Washington. You really should take another look at him.
    Jackson. Look at his presidency.
    Truman. Did very well( I think).

    Just my two cents.

    You could list quite a few. Washington - humm - he was our first President. In comparison to other Presidents, he was merely average. Jackson? Explain.

    Truman -

    No need to drop the A-bomb (even most military leaders at the time agreed that it was unnecessary).

    Corruption in office. A&E had a good report on Truman regarding this. I can't remember specifics, but he did have a lot of dirty linen.

    I couldn't include him on my list.

    I am hoping Dubya's term will be up in November. He can then go into obsurity with his dad in Kennybunkport. (taking Ashcroft and Rummy with him). In my opinion, he has done more to destroy what years of diplomacy has accomplished. If I may be so bold, I believe the only reason for Dubya's ouster of Saddam to avenge the assasination plot against his dad. He certainly didn't do it to destroy Al Queta or to help the hundreds of thousands murdered by Saddam over the years.

    Facts incorrect

    No, many concede that there was no need to drop the second A-Bomb. Most agree the first averted an invasion or further bombings, either of which would have killed more Japanese and Americans than both a-bombs actually did. However, many think further time could have been allowed before dropping the 2nd bomb. That observation is made as monday morning quarterbacks with the knowledge we now have of the going's on in Japanese government. Not exactly appropraite to fault Truman for a decision he made then without this knowledge.

    Pendergast connection. Yes, a very influential and crooked political boss got Truman into politics. However, there has never been a shred of proof Truman ever benefitted financially in any way from their relationship. Truman started a poor man and died a middle class one because he married a moderately well off woman. Not indicative of someone out to make a buck from politics.

    What does Gipper mean?

    Gipper

    In one of his first movies he played a character called Gipper. In the movie, when the character is on his death bed he asked the team to win one for the Gipper.

    1. I'm glad everyone has political views. To constantly hear what they are almost makes me want to see the "Off Topic" discussion board go the way of the Edsel. :rolleyes:

    2. It's time we string up Jimmy C. I mean, really . . . the guy announces major news stories as if we would not otherwise learn about them. Well, thanks, Jimmy! If it weren't for you, I never would have known that Reagan croaked. ;)

    3. Hey, people, the guy's dead! Stop talking to him and thanking him already. He can't hear you! Duhhhhhhhh . . . :D

    4. And even if he could, I get the feeling that the spirit of the late President Reagan is not reading degreeinfo.com. :p

    5. Moi, an insensitive lout? A warped-humor cynic? I soitainly [sic] hope so. Hell, I thought the biggest drag about 9/11 was that George Carlin had to change the name of his about-to-be-released album (which had previously been titled I Like It When a Lot of People Die). :cool:

    No, do not rest in peace, Ronald Reagan.

    You understood that communism is (not was) pure evil.

    When Cuba, China, North Korea and Vietnam are free;
    when Taiwan lives in security;
    when the big lie that slavery and freedom are morally equal is dead;

    then, Ronald Reagan, rest in peace.

    Not till then.

    Re: Gipper

    His character, named "George Gipp" was based on a real person. Gipp was a football player who many consider one of the greatest of all time. http://www.collegefootballnews.com/Top_100_Players/Top_100_Players_4_George_Gipp.htm

    Chris,

    Oh my dear Lord, we agree on Truman. Thanks lol. Washington was a great moderator between Jefferson and Hamilton . He wasnt some much a doer than a reactor and that what was needed during our country's infancy. Washington had a ton of talent that helped him during this time. His cabinent was a who's who in history. Jackson. The man ushered in a new era. Yes he was a egomanic,but tell me a general that wasnt. We had westward expansion and his presidency brought in the little guy. ( Look at the inaugural party...:))

    Odd, but Truman is one of my icons

    He disliked Republicans but he was not a liberal by any means. His is a very different story. Lived at home until later in life when he got married. If it had not been for WW1 he would have remained anonymous. But he joined the National Guard at the beginning of the war and was elected an officer. Yes, they still did that then. He served effectively in France and after the war started a habidashery (Sp?) (hat shop). When that failed, an Army buddy introduced him to Pendergast who was looking for someone to run for judge, which was more of a county manager in this case. He won and the rest is history. There were some rumors of chicanery in getting him elected to the Senate but that was common everywhere in those days (and even today, I could tell some stories). He never lost his common touch and one of his political problems was his crowd of Army budies which hung around the White House drinking and playing cards. Who cares, better than banging interns and groping female staff members. He knew what "is" was too. The plaque on his desk said "The buck stops here".

    Clinton didn't take responsibility for anything. Yes, I can't stand slick willy. He in particular pee'd me off when he was asked by a reporter about why as commander in chief it was appropriate for him to commit adultery when it was illegal in the military. He said he wasn't in the military. Then, he tried to use the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act to avoid a lawsuit. Despicable.

    To Mr. Engineer

    Mr. Engineer...you are a libertarian and you list Roosevelt as a good/best Pres? Strange. May I suggest you read some economics on that subject especially Milton Friedman, Austrian Economists, those at FEE.org and the book by John T. Flynn is especially eye opening. They may change your mind.

    Enjoy

    My personal criteria for my top Presidential selections is the ability to bring the country together during a crises. No doubt that Roosevelt accomplished these goals. Like Reagan, he expanded the federal government. However, people came together for a common goal under their leadership. A prime example of how not to lead is GW Bush. Instead of reaching out, he choose the "you are with us or against us approach" This has never worked and sounds like what the class bully would say to someone. No other President, including Nixon and Clinton, has divided us so much as GW Bush. I can only thank the god above that we have elections every 4 years to send another Bush into early retirement. Perhaps he can play golf with his one timer daddy in Kennybunkport.

    BTW
    I choose Jefferson because of his keen intellect and diplomacy skills. Keen man and savvy man Jefferson. Something that GW will never be.
