He might have, but on my reading, it's more likely that others misinterpreted his credentials.

I've even had Excelsior/Regents College mistaken for SUNY-Albany or SUNY-XXXXX College - by registrars.

As much as I hate the name "Excelsior College", this is a perfect example why it was probably a good idea in the long run to dump the "University of the State of New York" name. Too much chance for confusion with SUNY.

"As much as I hate the name "Excelsior College"

    New York State flag described:

Emblazoned on a dark blue field is the state coat of arms. The goddess Liberty holds a pole with a Liberty Cap on top. Liberty stands for freedom. At her feet is a discarded crown, representing freedom from England at the end of the revolutionary war. On the right is the goddess, Justice. She wears a blindfold and carries the scales of justice. Meaning that everyone receives equal treatment under the law. The state motto "Excelsior" on a white ribbon expresses the idea of reaching upward to higher goals. On the shield a sun rises over the Hudson highlands and ships sail the Hudson river. Above the shield is an eagle resting on a globe representing the Western Hemisphere.

Come on guys the name is in a "New York state of mind".

    Hi Adam

For those who have made peace with the name, my hat is off to you. To Excelsior: realize changing to a more substantial name and improving customer service would greatly increase enrollment.

His Martindale listing shows only a B.S. from SUNY-Albany and his J.D. from Washburn.

Yes, yes, I know what the New York State flag looks like. I also wouldn't like "Placidam College" if the people in Massachusetts adopted the same strategy of school-naming.

To be honest, I don't hate the name Excelsior nearly as much as I initially did, but I'm still not a big fan. I think "Albany State College" would have been a much bigger hit with potential students.

Going by that flag, Mass. should be known as "The Hepatitis State."

Albany State College still sounds like a SUNY school.

    Sarcasm is angers ugly cousin

Aaah! How the point seems to fly over heads like eagles. What is being stated is that Excelsior chose the name because it is a part of their State motto, so if someone asks, "What kind of name is that?!" one can answer very easily, "Excelsior is New York States motto." Simple enough. As for who likes it and who doesn't then its a matter of taste, and since we are free to make choices those who don't like the name are free to choose otherwise.

I personally am indifferent to the name, and this is in no way an attempt to defend it. Could they have chosen another name? Sure. Did they? No. So you either go with it or go elsewhere. But my post was to show that the name wasn't pulled out of a hat, a glove, a shoe, or someones rectum, apparently they wanted something that had a connection to New York State. Will that make you love the name? Doubt it. Does that really matter. Not even a hair on their chinny chin chin.

    By the way...

By the way the college is Massachusetts would not simply be called "Placidam" as thats only a part of the motto, it would have to be "Ense Petit Placidam Sub Libertate Quietum College" So I think the comparison was as far [fetched] as the East is the West.

But truth be told Albany State College does sound way better.:D
