    A Question...

What would make one a troll vs. a shill on this message board? What are the defining characteristics vs. someone who is just annoying? Any examples?

    Thanks.

Shill: Bob's University of Divine Bovine Love is a reputable program accredited by TWA and The World Association of Associations Accreditiing Other Associations. Several graduates have gone on to high levle government posts. If you disagree I will keep repeating the same mantra over and over.

Troll: Florida State Sucks. Everybody that goes there is an idiot, especially those in CS and Information Studies

(Of course I don't believe the FSU comment, I went there)

I am just annoying if you need an example of that.

There are two kinds of people; those who shill for trolls and those who troll for shills.

And the third kind are the Banned-by-Bruce; the skells.

    Shill is from:
    Troll is more derivative:
From this definition, one who fishes or baits for a reaction, often with a hidden agenda, such as discrediting someone who they feel has slighted them or given bad advice in the past, or whose advice the did not take and now want to vindicate themselves.

    JUST AN OBSERVATION

In the two months since I found this site and participated in this forum, I have found the vast majority of folks here to be very kind and very positive. They are also the people who come to this forum for its purpose, to learn and to educate others about adult learning and particularly DL.

Like any other discussion board there are a very few who don't have any positive focus for their energy, are profoundly insecure, or just downright miserable, take your pick, and who grind axes, flaunt the chips on shoulders, or just spew venom for the hell of it, take your pick, because they have a pitiful excuse for a life with way too much time on their hands.

    Sad.

The best way to deal with these types is ignore them. It's the worst possible thing you can do to them, all they really want is to get attention by getting someone's goat.

This forum has been very very valuable to me, and to a lot of others. The best way for us to keep it as good as it is, is to stay positive, and not allow the bullies among us to distract the serious ones of us from our pupose here.

    Shill

    Interesting?

I found an old 1947 Websters Dictionary about a month ago in a book store, a large one usually found in a library. Out of curiosity I looked up the word 'shill'. It says about the same thing that Mike Albrecht quoted except it mentions that 'shill' came from old carnival slang.

eBay also uses the word shill when warning about friends who help raise the price of an item.

Are we forgetting that trolls live under bridges?

No, but that is not the general usage implied here, whihc is dreived from the generally recognized first definition of troll. The Norse creature is the 2nd or 3rd (depending on source) definition.

In this instances the deravation from troll mean to fish is probalby more correct, as the Norse trolls tend to hide, while I have alwasy felt there was something fishy about anyone who would seek to cause problems by espousing ideals that they may not agree. If they would act like the Norse troll and hide there would be no reason to care about them.

I think that a 'shill' is a person that tries to influence other people to spend money for something, while hiding the act that they are employed by the business offering that product.

You see it in gambling casinos. "Gamblers" will come up to you and try to talk you into increasing your bets. And shilling was one of Sheila Danzig's "marketing" tips: Make a post to a discussion group using a fake name, "asking" about a product or service that your company offers. Then make another post under a different name, "replying" to the first post, saying "I use it and it's great!".

I don't think that there's a lot of shilling here. Of course, since by definition it's done under false pretenses, I might be unaware of a lot of it.

A 'troll' is a provocateur. Trolls like to start fights and create anger. They always try to move threads away from abstract issues towards personal resentment and animosity.

Personally, I think that some of our provocateurs just want recognition. That's why they tend to accumulate degrees from some pretty questionable schools. So they come here, and when they don't get the recognition that they seek, they lash out and go on the attack. They say, 'If I'm worthless, then so are you.' There's a lot of self-esteem issues with degrees and titles.

Ah, yes... Sheila has never been bothered by pesky things like ethics or morals. I can remember multiple occasions where she'd post various bogus messages to a.e.d, funneling people to one of her scams... one time it was a supposedly "independent" survey on whether people were interested in a particular type of DL program (when she was starting MIGS) another time it was drumming up business for something else.

And I'm told that she has actually filed a DBA so that she can legally (she says) claim to be somebody else. She also (when caught red-handed) always had great, convoluted stories about someone breaking into her office, using her computer with somebody else's name, and all sorts of other outrageous stories.

Shilling on DegreeInfo does slip through now and then, but when we identify it (which is generally pretty quickly), the people are quietly suspended, and life goes on.

So then if you had a combination of shill (for Pacific Western) and troll (liar about Bear, etc.) it would either be a trill or a shitroll.
