    (a) Their tuition is being increased. (b) the recent coronation of the new chancellor (who had already been serving for nine months) will cost about $100,000. This hugely expensive party is happening at the same time that they can't afford to buy toner for computer labs.

I don't know anything about this school or its recent problems (too many Democratic speakers, etc) but one thing I can say is that events such as the one described (the welcoming of the new Chancelor) typically are attended by all of the schools largest contributors. After a night of festivities and fairly intense lobbying they all wind up donating more money to the school with the net result being the school probably makes two or three times as much as it spent on the party. This induction of the Chancelor is probably not an ego trip but rather a thinly veiled fund raiser, an excuse to pull all the big donors under the same roof at the same time. Some of our business experts may agree that sometimes, you have to spend money to make money.

I hope Mr. Tracy is right and this is just a fund raising event. It wouldn't suprise me if UNCW was just wasting money though. In NC we are constantly hounded to pass bond after bond for schools, and later you get to hear how well they wasted all your hard earned money by erecting buildings in their own names  or by paying a superintendent 100k+ just to leave town.

UNCW is a beautiful place, with even more beautiful scenery (yes I'm talkin about the ladies if you cant catch the hint) I just hope they can get past this and continue on in providing the best party school atmosphere in North Carolina :D.
