You walk into someone's office and hanging on the wall you see their undergraduate degree along with their masters degree. The undergrad diploma is from an average RA college. Do you guys think it's kind of tacky hanging your undergrad diploma on the office wall if you have a masters degree, unless you got your undergrad from a school like Harvard or Brown?

How do you guys feel about people putting their undergrad degree on their business cards if they already have and advanced degree. I have seen many business cards where it said NAME, BA, JD or NAME BS, MBA.

    What do you guys think?

    The floor is open....

    No.

I think it's "kind of tacky" to suggest that only Ivy League alumni have the right to be proud of their degrees.

I don't think it's tacky. It might be redundant, if the advanced degree implies possession of the lower degree. But then again, what if the MBA is from Edinburgh Business School?

Well, I like to hang and display all my qualifications on the wall, regardless of the league of the university I graduated from. I think regardless of the University one completed his/her degree/s, they all have work hard to earn that/those degree/s and hence the reward and the self satisfaction is by displaying the degrees.

Ps. when i said, regardless of the University, I mean non Diploma Mills (we all know that the diploma Mills Degrees)!!!!!

I like to displays my degrees and qualification on the business cards as well. I think people (Business community) respects knowing that you're an Intellectual person. I like to see other people's qualifications on their business cards.

I think it is important to keep in mind that many folks may be the first of their family (or similar type of effort) to attain a college degree and so I would hesitate to make any comment on the school a person attended since individual abilities, family responsibilities, work responsibilities, etc... all may be factors and these individuals should not be slighted for being proud of their accomplishments. I don't put any credentials on my business card, and my diplomas are in a folder along with my honorable discharge. However, I have friends who only put their PhD on their card, but hang all their diplomas on the wall.

Why go the college and once graduated fold the diploma? Wouldnt nice to see it on the wall? I think its a proud moment to be graduated with a college degree. and rightfully one must display it and take the pleasures from it. After all its not like one eanred a St. Regis University BDA in 15 mins, here we spend 3-4 years of hard work for a undergrad.

    Thats my opinion anyway.

No, I don't display them, even though I am the first in my family to go to college. I don't even use business cards. The only things displayed on the walls in my office are the document from the hierarchy inducting me into this parish, and a crucifix. Those answer the "why you?" and the "why bother?" questions. All else is dross.

But if you're inclined to hang 'em high, why on earth would the "rank" of the school matter? Work is work and honor is honor.

I've had an undergraduate degree for 12 years, it's been framed and hanging on the wall for the last 11. If I get a graduate degree it's not like I'm going to take the Bachelor's degree down. Well, not unless I'm too lazy to bang another nail in the wall.

    Migara,

Pictures of my family and a corner shelf my father made adorn my wall. I would never fold my diplomas and will display them someday for my own satisfaction only.

A friend of mine has a really nice display. His wife framed and matted a section of his wall and placed his diplomas within this section along with college photos rather than hanging the diplomas individually in their own space.

    uncle janko,

    I was the first also.

I don't think it is tacky to hang up all your diplomas. If you have earned it, put it on your wall.

The one thing that gets me about credentials is when I read and article by "John Doe, M.S." and then find out that his masters degree has nothing to do with the subject he is writing about.

Would not "NAME, BA" or "NAME, MS" be kind of worthless on a business card? I could see using BSEE or MSCS and the degrees JD and MBA already indicate your field. Or am I one of the few who actually believe that the field you studies is important to your presentation?

I have 3 sets of letters after my name and use them all on cards, letterhead, etc. I hang them all plus an army commission scroll. If I get my DBA, I think I will just use it plus my accounting designation, but hang them all.

I am still looking to prove my UE, which I would use. It's one of 2 hereditary Canadian titles meaning descent from the good guys in the American Revolution, the other being the Baronage of Longueil, originally granted by the French crown and perpetuated by subsequent regimes.

I do not think hanging university diplomas on the wall is necessary. If someone walks into a professional office, such as a law or accountant's office, the accounting designation or state BAR association certificate usually carries more weight.
Most clients wouldn't know the difference between an LLB or MBA from a Regionally accredited school to that of a "life experience degree" from SRU, Farington or Almeda.

The dentist who owns the small dental clinic I go to has posted in the waiting room his diploma from his dental school and his AS diploma from the local community college. The latter, I'm guessing, is a message to the kiddies.

Most of the doctor's I work with at the hospital have all their degrees on their walls in their offices including their old BA's or BS's PLUS some have their newly minted MBA's up there too beside their MD's and PhDs. I guess I never thought why you wouldn't display all your degrees. All represent a fair amount of work and accomplishment.

My office is in my home and tucked away down the hall. When and if I even get the other two degrees I'm seeking, they will be on the main wall in my living room, just like my one is now. But in nursing, once one obtains their master's degree, you only list RN, MSN not everything else. But I really don't see why it matters, I guess it's just what is custom for a given profession.

My diplomas are on a shelf in a closet somewhere. Scientists don't display diplomas in their offices. It would be considered déclassé.

I work for three different universitys traveling back and fourth. Most full time professors who have their own office do have their diplomas framed and on the wall. A few don't but most do.

For those who don't, one can look in the back of the college catalog and see their credentials listed. There I see some Associates listed as well. (but rarely hanging on the wall).

I'm also the first in my family. My diplomas are tucked away - I can't remember exactly where. I'd never hang them in my work office, though maybe someday in my home office. Don't use any initials after my name.

It seems to be the custom for MDs/DOs, JDs some PhDs (thinking of psychologists) to put their degrees, certificates etc on their walls. Probably originated as a way of showing that their training was reputable - not a quack degree. A copy of their current license would suffice but that isn't as attrractive as a big fancy diploma.

You know, this is exactly the reason why I don't list my MSc on my business card, nor do I use that credential on any publications. A MSc in analytical chemistry from 22 years ago is absolutely irrelevant to my current occupation as a healthcare risk manager. I do, however, list my business and insurance credentials on my card, since those are relevant to my field: MBA, CPCU, ARM, CPHRM. And now that I think about it, I have no diplomas hanging on the wall. I think they are in a file cabinet somewhere.

My father never hung his diplomas, and as a matter of fact can't even find them. However, I hang all three of my diplomas. In my work there is some expectation that when customers visit your office, the can see your qualifications. Regardless, I would probably hang them up. I worked really hard for them. My wife paid at artist to specially frame and mat all of them. They look good and I like them. Oh well, I guess that may seem like a small bit of narcicism. To each his own. On my business cards, I only list the Ed.D. and my certifications to practice.

Hang my diploma's proudly? You bet. I worked hard for them and am very proud of my efforts. A degree, any degree, shows that you put aside a portion of your life in search of a better understanding of your enviornment or skill. Regardless if it is from Sequoia Institute or UC Berkeley, it doesn't matter.

I have two AA's and my bachelors on my wall, along with an MCP Cert, a NARTE Engineer Cert, General Radio Telephone license, and academy certification proudly on my wall. I also have my son's elementary grad certificate up there as well. My wife has her AA and in a few months will have her BSTM up there too.

When I receive my MBA in 2005/06, I will even spend the cash for a school ring. Is this showing off, you bet. But how many of our population have taken the time to educated themselves?
