Hmmm, guess the Italians have more backbone than some other European political leaders who we will leave unnamed. Let's hope this shows the terrorist vermin that murdering unarmed hostages don't work with most people.

Lets hope for the best for the others held hostage or otherwise in harms way over there.

Hope the Italian captives are Sicilian - scores to settle.

The above is just humour - I understand that there is not and never was a Mafia or Cosa Nostra and it was just invented by the FBI to persecute Italians and perpetuated by Hollywood to make profits.

There's a Mafia and a Cosa Nostra but no 'Ndrangheta.

Wait until they kill two hundred of them in a morning train in Rome the previous days to general elections to see them running far, very, very far.....

How could we fight misology from some ultra right wingers of these fora? Could they be somehow cured or is it just a chimera?

    Cordial greetings from The Netherlands

    EURO-WEENIES TURN DOWN OSAMA OFFER

Well, you gotta give them credit for at least not being predictable. In an audiotape released yesterday, Osama Bin Laden offered a truce with Europe if they stopped attacking Muslims. In other words, he said Al-Qaeda would leave the axis of weasels alone if they pulled out of Iraq. So what was their response?

First up, the Italian minister, a staunch U.S. ally in the war on terror. "It is completely unthinkable that we could start negotiations with Bin Laden," said Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini. Next, we heard from the President of the European Commission Romano Prodi, who said there could be no negotiating under a "terrorist threat." However, there was no word if he would be open to negotiating with Osama if there was no threat.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said "I don't think we need Osama Bin Laden to start telling us how to handle our political affairs." Then again, like Bush, Blair understands Islamic terrorists can never be appeased and must be destroyed. Now, I know you're just dying to know what Spain had to say. Incoming Prime Minister and surrender monkey Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said "there is no sense to terrorism. There is no policy in terrorism. There is just terror, death and blackmail." Well, apparently there is some sense to terrorism...the Al-Qaeda bombings in Madrid got him elected.

I'm a bit surprised by their quick reaction. However, Osama did say the limited-time offer lasted 90 days, so there's still time for them to change their minds. Maybe Osama will come up with a better deal.

And what was the response from the French? Oh .. I forgot. They're already sitting on the sidelines. If it wasn't for the French there probably wouldn't BE any sidelines.

Yep, absolutely no possibility of healing as expected. Perhaps an exorcism would help….

Isn’t there really anyone in this Off Topic section able to produce a minimally accurate political analysis? Can anyone elaborate on the shift of political power in the EU that once again favors France and Germany’s interests? Could anyone here predict the consequences that brutal massacre will have on the European Constitution approval? Does it serve the US interests? Does it not? Are we witnessing a new revival of the Old Europe opposed to the New Europe that Rumsfeld and some neocoms wanted to promote? Who, besides Al Qaeda, was interested to switch the Moncloa’s occupant? Is Britain’s position weakened within Europe? Why Blair’s political consultants have told him every time he goes near Bush he loses popularity? Anyone care to discuss the Greater Middle East Initiative as opposed to invading a nation? How will all these events affect and shape Iraq’s future? Will the transatlantic bridge weaken after all these? What is the transcendence, if any, to the European General elections next June? What to the American ones next November?

All I read here by some, I insist, some ultra right-wingers here is incoherent and incongruent boasting more appropriate to a tavern (and very late at night, when patrons start to see the glass not half full nor half empty but two glasses instead) or to a High School political science introduction class than to this agora.

Are they (these two) capable of complex thinking without passing out? Is it possible for someone in today’s intricate world to live with such an archaic and simple mental structure (good vs. evil, us vs. them? What a couple …...! :D :D :D

    Wow....

what an ego. Take it back to your little liberal smokefilled pub on the corner. You and your fellow Euro-rabble can all sit around in your tight leather pants, smoking godawful stinking cigarettes and talking about how superior you are to the barbaric Americans. Oh, and if you think continuing to call me a rightwinger hurts my feelings go ahead, you must need something to make you feel like a man after your government emasculated you. BTW, unless things have changed greatly, which I doubt, nobody really gives a snot about the Euro-parliamentary elections. Not even the Germans could get a decent turnout for them.

Disclosure: In the above post I used the term Euro-rabble. This was not a slander towards the Euro's in general. Just those that certain name callers on this forum appear to mingle with.

    As a past military policeman...

I can attest that I have witnessed many of my fellow Americans acting in a barbaric manner. A few liters of fest beer and voile, a barbarian!!

From previous disappointing experiences I didn’t expect much from you at all, but your vision of Europeans is quite revealing (hilarious disclaimer included). Didn’t I tell you that there was more to traveling than physically moving one’s body around? By reading your comments one can confidently affirm that while stationed in Germany you were not exposed to Goethe, Brecht or Kant (no, Chris, they aren’t Canadian for beer) to name a few. You should have tried to stay away from those Germans (wearing leotards – you’re hilarious, those truly exist!!!!) that seem to have made such an impression on you to recall it that vividly. That would explain though without any sort of ambiguity your absolute unawareness on European affairs.

Having said that I must agree that the description of Euro’s as you say is simply hilarious. :p

    Have a great weekend!! :)

Fed, , I too prefer American barbarians. Here men wear leotards and women don't shave their arm pitts. :D

    Nice weekend to you too!

    No, you are right...

I haven't exposed myself to Goethe or Kant. I'll leave that whole exposing thing to you. I really did love pulling the GI's off the Goethe statue on the Marktplatz, though. The birds never had any respect for him either, they kept crapping on his head. Anyway, dead philosophers make my teeth hurt and Goethe's Faust loses something when translated into English don't you think? His poetry sure did. Your apparent idolatry of them explains your naivete greatly. Those who spend years studying the dead rarely understand the living.

If I did haul my uncultured butt out it was for such uncultured things as an opera, ballet or play at the Stadt Theater (BTW, the best seats at the one in Schweinfurt were the 2nd best seats, the so-called best seats were too close to the stage to see the back of it). A never miss was Karajan when he conducted the Berlin Philharmonic (my father in law was a HUGE fan). Not to be too stuffy, though, I did make the occasional rock concert too.

Yep, I take great pride in my uncultured American ignorance. I view it as a contribution to western diplomacy. It lets smug Euro-rabble like yourself feel superior to us when you are feeling insecure.

Feel better yet with all your superior refinment? Well heck, isn't it the third week of the month. I better schedule my monthly bath.
