I am often asked about graduation ceremonies. Therefore the forum may be interested in seeing a University of London graduation ceremony. This year’s ceremony for External Programme graduates took place on the 19th March 2004 at Westminster Hall, London. Members of this forum may be particularly interested in the introduction and conclusion scenes. The introduction includes the speech given by the Chancellor (HRH Princess Anne). The conclusion given by the Vice Chancellor (Sir Graeme Davis) also contains some history about the External Programme and talks of the support that students need when studying. You can see a streamed video through the following link. Further information including still photographs will also be available on our website. Congratulations to all of our graduates, whether they chose to attend the ceremony or not. Brendan Fawcett Promotions Manager University of London External Programme
I couldn't see the video - only listen. Maybe my internet connection is not up to snuff. My father earned his PhD through the U. London external programme. But he didn't attend his graduation ceremony. My U. London MSc was through Birkbeck -- and I didn't bother to attend the ceremony (especially when they told me that we would be awarded fake diplomas). My brother also earned a degree through Birkbeck (but face-to-face mode), and I think he did attend because he lived very nearby. He's a great anti-royalist, so probably was not thrilled to receive the degree from Princess Sourpuss.
Thank you for sharing. It looked very international. British doctoral regalia are very colorful compared to the usual American bland black. A question about the three maces. One is the University mace and I wasn't sure about the other two - The Chancellor (HRH the Princess Royal) and the Vice Chancellor ?
