Ramkhamhaeng University in Thailand have number of students enrolled nearly 600,000, consisting of over 500,000 undergraduate and nearly 25,000 postgraduate students.

What university have number of students enrolled more than this and how much?

    Amazing!

It's also amazing that this Indira Ghandi National Open University seems to offer English language DL, but it has never been discussed on Degreeinfo to my knowledge. The largest university in the world! Is it possible for foreigners to enroll? I'd guess not.

This and Ramkhamhaeng University raise the question of how a university is defined. My understanding is that India has a whole bunch of mega-universities with six figure enrollments. But they turn out to be largely examining bodies, holding examinations for and granting degrees to students at a whole galaxy of local colleges scattered all over.

Besides examining bodies, there are multi-campus universities. The University of California is technically a single university, but it operates nine (soon to be ten) separate campuses (campi?). The University of London seems to be both an examining body (the external programme) and a multi-college teaching and research institution.

I wonder what the largest single-site teaching institution is. UNAM in Mexico City might be a contender, but the Asians can probably beat it.

What kind of university is this, zvavda?

I have a copy of 'The World of Learning' on my shelf that lists Thai universities. Most universities seem to hover in the 10,000-15,000 enrollment range. There's a Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University that's nearing 200,000. And there's Ramkhamhaeng University with an address in Bankok with an enrollment through the roof. The book says that it's state run and its language of instruction is Thai. It says that it has an open admissions policy. Apparently this is another national open university.

How does it work? Does it teach by DL? Does it teach at all, or is it just an examining body? Does it have students scattered at remote sites all over the country, or does everyone attend lectures at some grand mega-facility there in Bankok?

I checked into this a couple of years ago. IIRC, you either need to be living in India (regardless of citizenship) or you need to be an Indian citizen living abroad. Nothing else will do. Hence the lack of discussion.

It is. But it is no longer a degree-granting one.

I believe the largest, accredited university in the U.S. is the University of Phoenix, with almost 200,000 students.

Of course, as I'm sure decimon knows, SUNY isn't USNY.

Yes. I gave the SUNY figure as it approximates the figures of some of the national figures such as Thailand's. Or it does if it should be that the figures are figured equivalently.

As for USNY, the cumulative number of students in SUNY, CUNY and the other 246 college or university members would likely make it the largest university. If it can so be considered a university.
