In the thread on Tuoro classes the topic of what tui sttod for in respect to Union, and that got me thinking about the number of colleges whose "official" name began with "the" such as ""The" univeristy of Pennsylvania. Does nany one no of a list that show the offical names for collegfes and univeristies?
I've never found an official list. I used to wrestle with this issue regularly when doing indexes* and tables of contents. It's pretty silly to have to put in lots of cross references ("University of Pennsylvania: see "The University of Pennsylvania.") so generally I didn't. And even schools aren't consistent about how they refer to themselves. I once got an annoyed letter when I referred to "Kansas Wesleyan University." "Our name is just Kansas Wesleyan," they said. "No 'university.'" But now it seems they are a university. So, he wondered, are there any remaining schools, besides The Citadel, that don't have a noun suggesting they are a school? ___________ * I have learned, reading much about indexing lately, faced with doing one for the degree mills book, that the indexing fraternity seems to prefer "indexes" to "indices."
I'll drink to that!!! Whatever Mike is having -- that's what I want too!!! Must be some good stuff. In all seriousness, it was my post (in that other thread) that precipitated Mike's inquisitive mind.
Why what - why is she working on her masters or why at The Evergreen State College, or why "The" Evergreen State college? Oh by the way it isn't drink it is the sixth statistics based course in the last year and a half.
