While always a strong supporter of Native American rights and as one who believes if any reparations are owed any minority group, the Native Americans deserve them, I find this disturbing.

I'm surprised you are surprised. Courts try to keep families together, social services try to keep families together, everyone keeps giving kids back to abusive and drug addicted parents that's one of the reasons so many beautiful little kids end up dead or abused. We've had teenage mothers walk out of the hospital within 24 hours of delivering their preemie and/or drug addicted babies and tell the nurses they don't want the ***** babies and within weeks the babies end up back with their mothers when they have a change of heart, which is usually temporary, and then back and forth it goes. This happens every month at my hospital. We have a whole social services department that seems to stay in the barter-bargain system with little kids and their idiot low life parents.

If we took children from all cokehead parents we would run out of places to put them in about 3 days.

As long as they are not beating them, burning them with fags, or failing to give them the most basic food and care then they should keep them.

So some kids are going to be screwed up because their parents are loser drug addicts, we can't save them all no matter how much we want to.

    I'm not uncaring, just pragmatic.

  4. A way to deal with deadhead parents

They used to steralize undesirables. Why not now? It would save the taxpayers a lot of money, but what would the anti-choice people do?

Sounds like a great idea! And you are at the top of my list as an "undesirable."

I don't see what this has to do with reparations. Most Native Americans aren't asking for reparations, they are simply asking the U.S. government to uphold the treaties that it signed.

By the way, I think it's clear that this woman should not have custody of this child. It's unfortunate that a law that was passed with the intention of helping Native Americans has, in this case, achieved the opposite.

I have had the dubious pleasure of working with the Indian Child Welfare Act , which is the law to which the judge refers.

Congress enacted ICWA with the best of intentions to stop a serious cultural abuse by state agencies. Specifically, state child welfare agencies were taking tribal children away from their tribes and raising them "white". Since tribes and reservations, at least in those days, were frequently horribly poor, Indian parents often did not have the resources to raise thier children and provide for their various needs. Also, there were (and are) all of the other social problems of poverty as well. The result was a finding by a non-Indian judge of "neglect" and placement of the child in State custody.

However, taking the children usually meant destroying the tribe's future as an ethnic and cultural entity. The purpose of ICWA is to give the tribes a voice, and even sometimes exclusive authority over the placement of Indian children.

The whole thing is merely the latest manifestation of this country's inability to adopt a workable Indian policy.

I would consider it differently, perhaps financially incentivize women for taking birth control. This way, it is a choice, and though paying these would be mothers an amount not to have a child is more than having them on the welfare system. Just a thought, probably has some issues with it.
