I've just heard from a reader who says he got a federally-guaranteed loan, through Sallie Mae, for his Kennedy-Western studies. Having learned more about Kennedy-Western, he wishes to quit. He says he is being told by Kennedy-Western that they will keep 25% of the loan proceeds, which he is responsible for repaying to Sallie Mae. He said that "most Kennedy-Western students are on loan status with Sallie Mae."

    Can this really be so?

I've passed the information on to someone in the Dept. of Education who has interest in such matters, and she is looking into it.

Hi John - I'll be interested to hear about what you learn. Sallie Mae does do some lending for schools that is not tied to title IV - Aspen used to use them - so perhaps the student is confused.

As to whether or not the school keeps 25% that is likely tied to whatever agreement the student signed with the school - and once the money is disbursed to the school, subject to some limitations, the school need only return that portion that was not "used" and they can maintain that the student has used that much by virtue of whatever the student signed i.e. after X number of days we get to keep 25% even if you have not completed any courses. It is not so different than if the student starts a program at a brick and mortar school, drops out after four weeks maybe without attending any courses ...

    Keep us posted.

Back before I discovered DegreeInfo, and because of this forum selected U of London, I sent off to K-W for a catalog. It arrived with an application for a Sallie Mae loan.

It also came with a polite phone solicitation, but by then I knew what was up.

  5. From their Website:

"Kennedy-Western University is proud to announce the availability of STUDENT LOANS TO QUALIFIED STUDENTS Through SLM Financial Corporation, A Sallie Mae Company."

I beleive the key here is "A Sallie Mae Company." It is not a Federally Guaranteed loan. The student is required to pay the amount of the loan regardles if the student continues in school or not. The school does not refund anything to Salliemae. The loan is a negotiated instrument between the student and the SLM Financial Corporation. That's the way it was when I cosigned a SLM Financial Corporation loan for my son's educaton several years ago.

For tuition refund, Mary A was right on. There is a refund policy included in the contract with a graduated scale according to "quarters" calendar based from time of enrollment. At onset the 4th Quarter zero refund is given.

    Welcome back Dick!

I think we can now finally put to bed the "Dick Suhar is banned" rumor that didn't want to die.

Hi Bruce, didn't you ban Dick Suhar and Peter French a few months ago? :D

    So goes the rumor....:D

I can count on one hand the number of people that I've banned, and can state without reservation that Dick Suhar & Peter French are not among them.

Both had software issues that needed some tweaking. Dick was a gentleman (as usual) throughout numerous tweaks, and his account was finally brought back online.

OTOH, Peter immediately accused me of being involved in a vast conspiracy against him the first time my tweaking didn't work. I didn't/don't appreciate that, so I immediately stopped trying to tweak, and he now resides in some kind of DegreeInfo.com purgatory. Not banned, but not able to post either. I hope he enjoys it. :D
