The church is free to set their own agenda which often could differ from what society sets as norms. That's why we have hundreds of denominations instead of one.

There are other churches into which she may fit. When a silly old church actually believes what is written in the Bible, they must certainly be allowed follow up on it with policy. They call that freedom of religion.

In five years this could all be proven to have been a useless exercise. Things change.

This denomination itself claims Scripture as is its own primary source and criterion for doctrine. Marital roles and ecclesiastical offices are frequently discussed in the New Testament doctrine. So, is this debate, then, about Scriptural interpretation?

Actually, at last count there were more than 2,000! There are nearly 50 branches of Baptists alone!

Or do they just reappear....years, decades, or centuries later...repackaged as something totally different yet in substance essentially the same? And even if things do change, the deep question reaaly is does God change?

An individual's answer to that regadless of rationale or denomination ultimatley drives their position in all matters of faith and practice.

The way it appears however, that currently society (and through extension the government and the courts) is/are dictating to the church what it should and should not allow...that church ought to reflect and adapt to whatever custom, fad, feeling, idea, notion, gimmick. etc that society says it should because it is the consent of "common law." The church that fails to do so could be hit with numerous "incentives" to do so or else.

Rather than her changing to a denomination and faith persepctive that would openly embrace her position, she must evangelize the infidels who stubbornly cling to their "outdated" notions about marriage, the Bible, and perhaps even God. (Sarcasm well evident)

Things change...or do some things simply just reappear....months, years, decades, or centuries later...repackaged as something totally different and better yet in substance essentially the same as what passed away before? Is there truly nothing new under the sun? And even if things do change, the deep question really is does God change?

An individual's answer to that regardless of rationale or denomination ultimately drives their position in all matters of faith and practice.

sorry Jimmy. I meant the debate within that denomination, not between us.

For some reason this debate within the UMC never seems to be so intense as it has in the Episcopal or Presbyterian (USA) churches.

Let me start by saying...I am a member of the Methodist Church. This is interesting to me. It has been said that our church is one of the least strictest denominations at this time. I support all those who make a decision and stick by them. I did not believe that this was against the tenets of the church, but I guess I am wrong.

Sure. There are many churches that are discriminatory, and they certainly have that right. There are various White Aryan churches who won't allow blacks in their church, much less in the ministry. And, of course, there's the whole "God Hates Fags" contigent.

I'm very torn by it all. Should I hate blacks more than I hate fags? Well, I just have to ask myself, "Who would Jesus hate?"

    Re: Update

"Church law prohibits the ordination of open homosexuals and the church's Book of Discipline declares homosexuality to be 'incompatible with Christian teaching.' However, the denomination's social principles support gay rights and liberties."

Huh? Is it just me, or do these two positions seem completely incompatible? I'm not trying to say anything negative about the Methodist Church here -- I'm just honestly confused. These just seem to be polar opposites to me.

What was the F. Scott Fitzgerald line . . . something about holding two opposing opinions in your mind at the same time?

No, not just you! It's the same double talk that usually goes with bigotry!

Is it just me or are the bigots the ones that attack well founded church doctrine.

What any particular denomination believes has zero impact on those who choose to avoid it.

    Hi Dennis,

Is this directed toward me? I was honestly not attacking the Methodist Church -- I was raised in it, in fact. I am just genuinely confused by what I see as conflicting messages.

    Regards,
    Adrienne

P.S. Congrats from me, too, on 2000 posts! I'm excited to just be creeping closer to the magic "senior member" number of 100! :)

    Just noticed I made it!

When do I get my senior discount coupon in the mail?

You know, the one that allows me five posts to say anything I want without fear of banishment.

    JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!
