    Hello,

I am planing on starting a new hobby were I will become pen-pals with prisoners that are on death row. I think this will be a very interesting learning experience and kind of like my way of giving back to society and giving a second chance to those that really need it. Has anyone on here done this sort of thing before? If so what kind of an experience was this for you?

    Thanks

Why would you want to do that?

I'm not trying to be funny, but how do you give a second chance to someone who is waiting to be executed?

I believe that there are many lonely people (e.g. elderly people without families) much more worthy of attention than the people on death row. So while I admire your desire to do something, I don't admire your choice of what to do.

Is this about, like, a kinky sex thing? :D

I'm sure Mike Farrell will be happy to give you names and addresses.

It would also be interesting to see how the families of the victims are doing. It's more likely they're in need of some support.

Having been the victim of a violent crime, I too would rather see you spent your time helping the families of victims, rather than the perpetrators. I'm sure there are many organizations that would be happy to help you find those families. Please consider it.

Would you say that the 146 people who were on death row and have been exonerated by The Innocence Project were not worthy of attention?

(By the way, if you don't believe that these people were actually innocent and that they got off on a technicality, I suggest you take a look at the site.)

Most people on death row are guilty. Some are not.

If you really want to do this, I would suggest working with the Innocence Project to identify a prisoner who has been cleared by DNA evidence but has not been released, or when for whom the state is attempting to block DNA testing (yes, many states would prefer to execute people than to allow a simple test that could prove their innocence.)

Working towards the release of people who have been wrongly convicted is certainly worthy of attention. But that's not what was proposed here.

    Bruce,

What I meant by a second chance is that this people are very lonely and most of them don't really have any friends. So if think it would make them feel a lot better to know that they have a friend on the outside.

Also a lot of prisoners that have been in jail for a long time lost all their family and friends. I think that if they had a friend on the outside that showed then they care, the chances of them going back to a life of crime when they are released into society would be a lot smaller.

True. And neither was writing to elderly people without families. You made a suggestion, I made a suggestion.

You also made a blanket statement that people on death row were not worthy of attention. I disagreed, and provided evidence to back up my statement -- 143 innocent people who would likely be dead right now if it weren't for a few people who thought they might be worthy of a little attention.

If that is your goal, why focus on prisoners on death row?

Ha ha ha ha!!!! Steve, your sense of hummer really cracks me up. However I have no problem getting action from boys on the outside, so those are not my intentions. But to be perfectly honest with you some of the best sex of my life has been with guys I met in places where I least expected to find a sex partner. So I guess you never know, maybe I will end up meeting a really hot guy and will end up hitting it off. ha ha ha!

Also after I stoped laughing your comment did make me think what it would be like to have sex with a guy that has been in prison for a long time and has gone for many years without sex. Would the sex be much more hot and intense? Would he be able to satisfy me better then a guy on the outside would? Anyway I am getting off topic here so back to my original question. LOL

    Jeff,

I have briefly looked through the web site and this sound like very interesting topic. Thank you for sharing this interesting information. When I get a chance I will contact the people that run this program to find out more about it and how I could help.

    Jeff,

I have not decided yet if I am going to become pen-pals with prisoners on death row or prisoners they will be released back into society in a few years and that don't really have anyone on the outside that cares. I will probably end up becoming pen-pals with both prisoners on death row and prisoners that will be released back into society.

I really have to ask this! In a supposedly civilized society why do we have people on death row?????????????

This is frankly the most bizarre thing I have ever read on degreeinfo.

Death row pen pals & sexual discussions, can this be any less related to distance education?

I realize that there is an off topic forum, but do we really have to discuss one anothers sexual fantasies?

This board is quickly going down hill.

I've got a few thoughts here. The first is this: we sometimes can get bogged down in semantics but in philosophical circles we know that if you can't agree on a common language, that is, the definitions of specific words, then you will never agree on anything. With that being said, I don't mind reporting that I am lucky enough to have several good friends. I have a much larger number of acquaintances. The difference between these two groups is stark. I do not believe that anyone can develop a real friendship through the mail. Real friendship requires a degree of intimacy that mere correspondence does not allow. Secondly, and I confess that I do not have any statistics to back me up, my own idea is that the vast majority of persons on death row are sociopaths (an archaic term used to indicate that a person doesn't give a damn about anyone or anything other than themselves). They are repeat offenders who have clearly indicated by their behavior a complete indifference for society, the rights of others, and the law. You want to be "friends" with these people? I suggest you examine your motives. If you are truly interested in reaching out to someone who is lonely, needs a friend, and can not seek one out on their own, I'd suggest you visit some local nursing homes. These are full of people who have no family (to speak of) and would love to have someone with whom to talk. If this doesn't seem appealing then I suggest you again examine your motives.

    Two thoughts:

First, am I glad you didn't say they were psychotic, lest you be accused of making a "clinical dx."

Speaking of which, Jack, have you ever worked with a Folie a Deux dx?

Second, let's remember there may still be those on death row who are innocent.

How's the dissertation coming? I'd love to read it when it's finished.

From your posts I bet it will be a masterpiece. The social work field is void of fresh ideas right now, I think.

It seems most of the innovative therapeutic approaches are coming from the MFT crowd.
