I don't really follow any sports, but this is pretty cool.

"The Liberty University men’s basketball team, the 16th-seed in the East Rutherford regional, will face top-seeded St. Joseph’s on Thursday, March 18, in the first round of the 2004 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, N.Y."

"The Liberty University women’s basketball team, the 14th-seed in the West regional, will face third-seeded Georgia on Saturday, March 20, in the first round of the 2004 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship at the the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pa."

Outstanding. I just wish their superior debate team got similar press.

I was reading about the debate team.

"But, the activity doesn’t all come from sports. The Liberty University Debate Team completed its season in the American Debate Association last weekend at the ADA Championship Tournament held at George Mason University. Liberty again made history by becoming the first school to have a team in all three final rounds (novice, junior varsity and varsity) at ADA Nationals. The Debate Team also finished with the most rankings points of any school in the history of the ADA.

The season is not yet over, however, for the debate team. The team has taken the first step toward winning all three national rankings championships with its history-making performance last weekend at the ADA Nationals. No intercollegiate debate team in the country has ever accomplished such a feat. Both of Liberty’s varsity teams have qualified to participate in the 58th National Debate Tournament to be held at Catholic University, April 1-5, 2004. Liberty and Georgetown University were the only two schools in their region to qualify two teams to the tournament.

I am looking forward to hearing of a sweep of all three national championships by this great team."

Congratulations to Liberty. That is pretty cool.

But it reminds me of that phrase: "Be careful what you wish for, because you might just get it". St. Joseph's almost ran the table, coming very close to finishing the season undefeated. They are scary-good.

If Liberty upsets them, I'll have to reconsider my ideas about divine intervention.

I was delighted to read (and add to my bag of useless higher education trivia) that there is another school that is in the NCAA tournament for the first time, that is the only Division I school that has a height limit on incoming students (which certainly affects their basketball recruiting) . . . and (this is the wonderful part), the height limit is based on your height when sitting down.

(I would love to have used this for a Spring Puzzler, but the cat is already out of the bag, pretty much. Probably 30 seconds for Gus Sainz and less than three minutes for everyone else.)

So the gold telephone in Jerry Falwell's private office rings. He picks it up. It is God on the line, the first time God ever phoned him directly.

"I've got good news and bad news," God says.

"The fact that you made the NCAA tournament was pointed out to me," God explains. "Congratulations. The good news is that because of this, I have taken a strong personal interest in basketball in general, and this tournament in particular. A very strong interest. I've even placed a substantial wager on the outcome with Lucifer."

"And what is the bad news," Falwell asks.

God replies: "I'm calling you from a phone booth in Palo Alto."
