Homeland Security's experts deduced that Bin Laden would have to have found a hiding place where . . .

    (1) It's easy to get in if you have enough money

    (5) You have no obligations or responsibilities.

Analysts are still puzzled, however, as to how Bin Laden found out about the Texas Air National Guard in the first place.

That's pretty good....I can appreciate a good joke, even if I don't agree with the underlying theme.

However, I'd like to ask Ms. Ivins what she might say to the families of all the National Guard/reserve soldiers killed in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and the two Gulf Wars.

I'd also be interested as to what she thinks of President Clinton's refusal to serve in any branch of the military, active or reserve.

My father in law joined the SC National Guard in order to get his 1 year requirement out of the way in 1940. They liked him so well they kept him for five years and sent him on an all-expenses-paid tour of Sicily and north Africa. Of course he did have to do a little anti-aircraft work from time to time.:)

Indeed! Bin Laden would have perhaps been equally at home serving in Viet Nam for several months, which, according to Senator Kerry would have provided further terrorist training.

Maybe the Guard is different in Texas.

My boy in the Oregon Nat'l Guard ,who had no money , has been in Iraq a year and he certainly does have responsibilities.

If any thinks the NG is easy, perhaps that one would would like to join Dan there.

    Get a grip people

The National Guard's tenuous link with the Regular Army has always made for lousy record keeping. I just helped a young man get a DD Fm 214 after his final (of three) National Guard units closed down and told him to go home 6 months before his separation date. They constantly change missions and get new unit designations etc. and that also makes for a record keeping nightmare. I am 42 years old and would have a hard time remembering everyone who ever worked for me in my career which ended only 8 years ago. This flap over Bush being "AWOL" is a farce. And it is a bigger farce for some of the non-serving individuals to make a fuss about something of which they have no experience.

Molly Ivins is a nut case (not even a liberal nut case, just a nut case) so who cares what she thinks?

All of this is fine and well, but how do you then explain this picture?

after 18 years in the Army (more than a few assignments to USAR and ARNG units) and a visit to Saudi Arabia/Kuwait/Iraq in 1991 -- I found the TX ARNG joke funny! And, sorry if I offend any -- it's funny because it rings of some truth...

If I told y'all the difference between a Marine and pig (see below) would that be taken as disrepectful toward Marines (or pigs) or would it be taken as a joke?

Ok, maybe some jokes are poorly timed - or offensive to some audiences - or even in bad taste; and yet, the few vets and active folk I showed this TX ARNG joke to thought it was funny as h*ll...

It always has to come back to Bill Clinton, doesn't it? Although I dislike Bush more than Clinton, I am not fond of either. (Bush's WMD lie was not as offense to me as the aftermath of Clinton's claim in his first campaign that he would have 'the most ethical administration in history.')

Although I enjoyed the joke, in reality the whole Vietnam question is pointless, in terms of this campaign. A presendential candidate's military background may be important to demonstrate that he has the knowledge and wherewithal to be Commander In Chief. And I don't think I've ever heard anyone accuse the Bush administration of not being militaristic enough.

Yet Kerry wants to challenge Bush to a debate on Vietnam. What is the point? Vietnam was very important to our country, but it's over, and has been for a quarter of a century. Now, a debate on the future of the War on Terror would be interesting and would actually provide some relevant information. Of course, that will never happen.

Anyway, conservatives who continue to making everything about Bill Clinton remind me of the mill shills who can't make a point without mentioning Rich Douglas.

    Let it go.

Thanks John. There is only one Molly Ivins.

These threads get too serious - your levity is much appreciated.

No, but it's one more thing that highlights Kerry's hypocrisy.

He (Kerry) gave a passionate speech during the Bush/Clinton campaign, pleading with the voting public (I'm paraphrasing) to not get hung up on who served in the military, or how. Now, all of a sudden, he wants to make military service the only issue in the campaign. That would be fine, as long as he names the US soldiers (or their units) that he testified before Congress that he saw killing civilians, chopping off ears, etc. in Vietnam.

He can't have it both ways in the end, even though he's made a career so far of doing just that. The only thing John Kerry likes more than straddling both sides of an issue is marrying rich women.

I can affirm that the Regular Army was not a stickler for keeping records.

It is funny on its face, but the overall theme of the message sucks, and is NOT funny.

National Guard and Reserve troops are in the line of fire almost every day in several places around the globe. For Ms. Ivins to trivialize the service of these troops is beyond the realm of bad taste.....it's disgusting.

The only time I faced real bullets in the military was when my National Guard unit was activated for the first Gulf War. I don't want to see anything about how the National Guard is a hiding place for people looking to avoid active military service....it isn't.
