Hi all, I have come across an individual claiming the following: The American University (PhD, Political Science), 1959 I can't find any reference in the NOOSR guides, nor Bears Guide. Can anyone confirm existence of this institution circa this time? Cheers, George
Hi George. Here in the states, if a person claimed a degree from 'The American University', I think that people would understand that to mean the one in DC. It's regionally accredited, has lots of specialized accreditations, is moderately prestigious and has a well regarded Ph.D. program in political science. http://www.american.edu/spa/phd/ But the sun never sets on something calling itself 'American University'. The earth is crawling with them. Most of them are legitimate, but they are different unrelated institutions. American University in Beirut is a long established (since 1866) and very well regarded one. Unfortunately it was shot up pretty thoroughly in the Lebanese civil war. But the school's tough and it's back up and running. It's chartered by the state of New York and recognized by the Lebanese government. But it decided to seek regional accreditation as well and is currently a candidate with Middle States. http://www.aub.edu.lb/aub-online/history/ American University in Cairo is another long established one, fortunately with a less turbulent history. It's accredited by Middle States. http://www.aucegypt.edu/about/accreditation.html For an AU in a really hostile anti-American environment, there's American University of Paris. It's accredited by Middle States. http://www.aup.fr/main/about/accreditation.htm American University in Bulgaria received regional accreditation from NEASC in 2001. http://www.aubg.bg/dbtext/text.php?i=14 American University in Armenia was recently granted candidacy by WASC. http://www.aua.am/accreditation/ American University of Sharjah (in the UAE) is a candidate with Middle States. http://www.aus.ac.ae/admissions/2004/accreditation.htm American University of Rome is accredited by ACICS, not regional accreditation but a legitimate accreditor of small business colleges. http://www.aur.edu/docs/58.htm There's an American University in Dubai that's a branch campus of American Intercontinental University and gets its regional accreditation that way. http://www.aud.edu American University of London sports "accreditation" from some extremely doubtful outfits that you will no doubt recognize. http://www.americanuniversity.org.uk/accreditation.html American University in Hawaii tells us that accreditation is a controversial matter and that the school doesn't need it because it's a "global university". http://www.auh.edu/about.htm
