It means that if a war starts between Canada and another country, we'll have to send in the RCMP on horseback!
This is another Liberal blunder that has caused Canadians to be ashamed of their political leaders. With all the political corruption, conflict of interest scandals, fiscal mis-management and arrogant-incompetent bureaucrats telling the citizens of Canada what to do, we're lucky to have a national police force let alone an army. If this corruption continues, the U.S. will eventually end up with a banana republic on its door steps.
Will be become dependent on the U.S.? Well..as long as we can continue to provide the U.S. with natural resources in return for cash, we may not need to look south for financial support. But I can almost picture Paul Martin walking back and forth on Parliament drive wearing a sandwich boad that reads "Eat at Uncle Sams".

If we could accustom ourselves to sticking needles in our eyes maybe then, naw.

Hate to tell you this - Canada's economy is doing better than America's. Do you guys remember what a fiscal surplus is - oh been a while?

The unfortunate thing is that defence is a non-issue among most voters so it is neglected.

    Oops!

Hate to tell you this, but a fiscal surplus can have absolutely nothing to do with the economy. That has more to do with government spending compared to receipts. The current deficits in the USA are designed to boost the economy. As each others biggest trading partners Canada's and the US's economy's are like 2 peas in a pod and they rise and fall together with Canada's generally lagging right behind the USA's.

    Re: Re: Canada soon bankrupt?

Yeah....mostly because we send billions of dollars every year into the sinkhole known as "foreign aid", and billions more maintaining the best military in the world, so our neighbors and allies don't have to.

    Blame Canada!

Unless you're interested in empire, an army is an insurance policy against external attack or internal revolution. Absent the likelihood of American invasion or insurrection in Saskatchewan, why should Canada spend the resources to maintain one?

    Re: Blame Canada!

Because the clowns in Ottawa believe that big brother (the U.S.) will come to the rescue in the event of a war or invasion. Sort of like, a little kid who befriends a bouncer or bodybuilder. If the little kid gets a bloody nose, his friend will break the attacker's jaw.
But what happens to the kid when he gets caught with his pants down and big brother isn't around to help him?

    Be fair...

it's not just Canada that does that. It happened in Kosovo and in Bosnia both of which are European countries. Since it was in their sphere of influence why didn't the European Security Council handle it? They shoved it off onto NATO because then the USA would do all of the heavy lifting. Now, 5 years later, we still have troops there keeping the peace. The majority of the world cries and whines that we must do something until we do something that they don't like. Then they get mad. When Liberia erupted it was the USA that was supposed to do something. When Haiti erupted in 1998 the UN called on us to handle it because it was in the America's. Many in the rest of the world wants to have their cake and eat it too.

Another thing a military does is protect your economic interests around the world. Canada's econmomic interests are virtually the same as ours since we are each others biggest trading partners. If we act to protect our interests we are defacto acting to protect theirs. However, I am not attacking Canada as they have been very active in NATO and NORAD for decades. They maintained troops in Europe until the 90's (great PX!) and provided troops in Afghanistan (have France or Germany?). Canada has done its part. My input into this thread was to point out the fallacy of someones comment on the Canadian economy being stronger than ours.

    No

    No.
But on occasion I do find news at that web site associated with "Freepers."
(Not in the above case of news, [if ever].)

    Re: Re: Canada soon bankrupt?

    Dennis-

Very funny (what I cut out)! But this misses my serious point. Canada is not The Netherlands; Canada is a continental nation - isn't it second largest in the world, by area?

Does it indicate the emergence of some kind of Canadian exceptionalism? i.e., "we're a continental but empty first world nation, but we don't have to comport ourselves like all other developed states - and that's a good thing." The apogee of Canadian nationalism is negative protest, it is said: we're not like the US?

A kind of cutting off your nation's nose to spite those uppity, militarististic sourtherners - i.e., the US?

    Re: Be fair...

Question: anybody know of anyon, say in IR, who has theorized this growing contemporary international co-depedency between nations?

I wonder if this book by UTexas law school prof Philip Bobitt (sp?),
The Shield of Achilles: War, Peace and the Course of History (Knopf, 2002)

Canada has no enemies. It only has one neighbor. The US knows enough to leave us alone because we would shame them into a national healthcare system and bankrupt them.

Hah! You'll sing a different tune when those Greenlander hordes sweep west. And keep a sharp eye on the French St.Pierre and Miquelon.

  17. After that disaster, our children-- probably by U.N. mandate-- would be forced to refer to the 26th letter of the alphabet as "zed." I predict chaos in the streets.

That disaster will be averted, at least for 4 more years, if you re-elect President George W. Bush.

I'm not a huge fan of his, and I have several serious disagreements with some of his policies, but I can say for sure that he would never cede our sovereignty to the United Nations.

I can't say the same for John Kerry.
