    Dear All,

This is funsy thread. Many of us on the board are studying for/or will study for a Phd. I am curious as to what field it is in and your research topic. This is for the dreamers too. Tell us what you would like to study...at the Phd level. Mine is in history and my research topic is the Federal Writers' Project . This is kinda like an ice breaker at the DL Forum Mixer...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Societal influences/changes brought on by advances in terrestrial and space-based communications. For instance, DL. :D

    Great topic for discussion!

At this point I have no interest in pursuing a doctorate and don't anticipate earning one in my lifetime.

I simply see no point. The costs would be tremendous, the payoff nil.

My interests are moving in the direction of non-degree, non-credit education where accreditation is irrelevant, a form of DL that while quite common is rarely discussed on Degreeinfo.

If and when I ever enroll in a Ph.D. program, it will be in Criminal Justice/Criminology or a closely related field. I'd really like to study Psychology, but I don't have the time to do the internship that is required for all the programs I've looked into.

I'd like to see everyone awarded a PhD at birth. Then we wouldn't need to worry about all this, and could move on to something more productive.

I can't see myself pursuing another PhD. If I had the time to do that, I'd be better off spending it writing a book, or working as a volunteer, or ...

That would be an interesting topic if you're prepared to expand on it.

I am in favor of bought degrees, but I think that any price over $100 is gouging.

As far as PhDs awarded at birth are concerned, the best approach would be to have each degree issued at the same time as the birth certificate. So it would be presumably be issued by the County or the State.

You may think I'm joking, but I really believe that we'd be better off without having the ability to differentiate ourselves from others by titles and post nominals. Since we can't take the PhDs away from those who already have them, let's just give PhDs to everyone.

I am remembering the cartoon that was in all the early editions of Bear's Guide: the king is on his balcony addressing his people, saying (I paraphrase), "I want this to be the best-educated country on earth. Therefore I have decreed that you shall all be issued a doctorate in the field of your choice."

After it appeared, I sent the cartoonist, J. B. Handelsman, an honorary Doctor of Cartoonistry of the Millard Fillmore Institute, and he, in turn, sent me the original art for this and his other degree cartoon,* which are framed and hanging on my wall.
