A Question... Is there anyway or was there a time that you can get a DL education/degree for free or very low cost (lower that the big three) without having to print out the diploma yourself? Just curious
Well, It is unaccredited, but it is free...www.nationsu.org. I am working on my Masters degree in Relgious Studies ( emphasis on Church History)
Someone else pointed out this "Free University." There was, IIRC, a project called the Internet Free University that seems to have disappeared. Of similar philosophy and preceding the IFU (hey, I didn't choose the name) was and is the Virtual University which has apparently scaled down its aspirations.
Fin aid is your friend Another option might be financial aid. If you qualify, your pell grant can be around $4000.00 yearly, enough for a state university in many locales. More and more DL degree programs are added yearly so, though this isn't really "free", as we all pay for the programs. It will be without cost for you, unless you use the stafford, perkins or other loan programs. Do your research, fill out your FAFSA and let'er rip.
A few... There was a short lived free degree program in Computer Science by, I believe Philip Greenspun. It was funded by his technology company and when that spun out of control the program ended although last I remember there was a fair amount of info on their web site. Here are some links that I haven't checked out: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=greenspun+free+degree&btnG=Google+Search The College of the Ozarks offers a free B and M degree program for those accepted. It does require work in their work study program, but is otherwise free of charge. If memory serves there are a couple of other such programs. The main page for the free university progect is http://freeuniv.com/
If you're eligible (military officer or senior USG employee) the U.S. Naval War College is regionally accredited and offers graduate credit-bearing courses via DL. No cost, except for books in two elective courses (for "core" courses in the Command and Staff Diploma program, the books are mailed out on loan) and incidental costs like mailing assignments. Limited admissions, but unbeatable value.
My Master's program was totally free, thanks to a very generous tuition waiver program for Veterans. All I had to pay for was books, and I saved about $10,000 total.
Re: Re: Re: Free DL Education? Several years ago I asked that of the Virtual University and they said that some of their courses had been accepted at some colleges. Back then they had courses that well paralled standard courses. This link is for their course calendar and you can, if you're interested, email them for advice. This link gives the raison d'etre of VU.
Greetings, Virtual University sounds amazing in offering FREE education. Well, $15.00 is nothing to what we are currently making. The great part that some college or universities accept their credit as CEUs. http://vu.org/handbook.html#credit . I am wondering if they have a list of students who reported that their credits were accepted by actual schools. I would think some schools likes Gramtham University would accept these credits. I'll try to enroll one class in HTML, the easiest class to see how it works. Maybe I'll receive off-duty education credit toward my promotion... who knows? Semper Fi, Tekman
