    where's Wallis and Fatuna?

    LUMT's accreditation info is here:

So they're a foreign institution, not subject to British law?

The faculty part of the site doesn't list any names that I can find.

They seem rather similar to this outfit http://www.uncedu.co.uk/index.html

Their description of their PhD programmes, at http://www.lumt.co.uk/prphd.htm may seem eerily familiar to anybody who's ever thought of doing a PhD at The University of Colorado at Denver http://www.cudenver.edu/Academics/Programs+and+Degrees/Ph.D+Programs/default.htm

Their student services page http://www.lumt.co.uk/ssoverview.htm may be familiar to anybody who's thought of studying at City University in Bellevue, Washington http://www.cityu.edu/student/index.asp

And the overview about the registrar http://www.lumt.co.uk/acregistrar.htm might also be known to any of you who went to Ohio State http://www.ureg.ohio-state.edu/ourweb/about/mission.html

I admit I don't understand. Why do they link to the University of Colorado's Ph.D. programs?

    monkeys and typewriters

Prehaps it is just coincidence that unrelated organizations happen to have identical text appearing on the referenced pages.

This sort of thing happens in the U.S., too, as we see with Berne University. In Berne's case, however, the governing body (the state of New Hampshire) could step in and stop it. But they don't.

Where on earth is this island nation of Wallis and Fatuna located? It is probably located somewhere in the outer space.

Thanks for the link. The island is actually a French oversea territory. Territoire des Iles Wallis et Futuna is not a kingdom. It's not even independent.

I usually stay away from passing judgment on any school, accredited or not. After all, I am no expert on higher education. However, as a LAWYER, I just have to ask, " WHO do these people think they are kidding?"

Poor immigrants into the UK who don't know that we have a national entry system to university? Unlikely, but unfortunately possible.

People from India or South Asia or wherever who don't know that the UK has a national entry system to universities, a standard accreditation system and one single list of valid degree-awarding bodies?

After all, even when you go to the DFES web site, it's bloody difficult to find the list of accredited universities. Click on "higher education" and you get the "AimHigher" site, which is aimed firmly at us Brits; enter "university" as a search term, and the list of recognised institutions is only number 7 on the list; there is no direct link to the list on the DFES front page.

It's not even as if they're actually breaking any laws...

Remember, folks http://www.dfes.gov.uk/recognisedukdegrees/index.shtml is your friend.

I am not too sure on the legal side.
The legislation does require them to take reasonable steps to inform people that this is not a UK degree and most of the site is dedicated to convincing people of the opposite.

On their web address registration information I read "This registrant is an individual who has elected to have their address omitted from the WHOIS database."

Presumably, because they know there are folks out there like me who can find the street address and match it to a UPS Store address, home address, or perhaps a Mail Boxes Etc. It could mean a number of things, but since this school is essentially screaming "Look at me! I'm a screaming degree mill!" I presume my theory to be correct.

    Thanks for stopping by.

    Your's in educational integrity,

I have had a bit more time to look at this. LUMT claims to be registered in Delaware and clearly connected with the supposed University of New Castle based in 'downtown London'

It is company 3700742 incorporated in Delaware on 09/08/03

(thats the backward US date, actually 8th of September for us foreign chappies!).

The agents are listed as Corporations USA LLC, also a Delaware company. There seems to be no easy way to find the names of the stockholders (if any).

The lumt site is a clone of the University of New Castle site (even copies its name at times)

Both .co.uk versions of these sites have their whois details blocked, however the us version of the New Castle site is attributed to a Fran Cirillo, apparently an official of the IACUI which accredits. If this is so then there would seem to be some conflict of interest here!

The site does not seem to open for me, but if you check the HTML on the index page the following appears:

    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">
    <!-- saved from url=(0041)http://www.cityu.edu/admissions/index.asp -->
<HTML><HEAD><TITLE>Welcome to London University of Management & Technology</TITLE>

Yes, code flogged from City University.

    Cheers,

    George
