    Hi, I am writing from P.R., sorry about my English.

    I am admitted to a Law School in Puerto Rico. I will start in June, because I have to take some introductory course. The question is this, I am planning to study full time (so I go to quit to my police work as a Sergeant ). A person that study law full time, have great chances to pass the State Exam? What are your experiences?

    MA Caribbean University(Criminal Justice)
    BA American University (Criminal Justice)

    From your previous posts here and their answers you probably can surmise the answer you are will soon read from our learned collegues of the Bar.

    If you got into a law school with degrees from mills then it probably is not an ALA accredited law school and the chances of being allowed to sit the examination, albeit pass the exam are slim to none.

    But I'm glad you're having a good time on the board!

    ....and this question is -- what law school are you admitted to and studying full time? As mdoniel pointed out your chances are slim if it a bogus school.

    There are three law schools in P.R. Each is ABA accredited; each teaches in Spanish and English; each enjoys a very good reputation.

    Congratulations and good luck!

    You are using the term Degrees From Mills, Please refrase, The first two degrees American and Caribbean from police are both RA. THe PhD is already known that is not accredited, and to be able go to law schools in Puerto Rico only is needed a BA and Police has one of the subject that qulifies him. I am pretty sure he knows the limitation for his Phd as I know mine from my DBA. Puerto Rico goverment is very strict when it comes to law, to give an a sample, only lawyers (yeah the one that pass the Bar) are allowed to be notary public, in contrast here anyone could be notary public.

    Regards,

    Vini (than only needs an accounting degree with 30 addtional credits to be able to sit for the CPA any where in the U.S. and terretories)

    Police,

    Inter, UPR or the one located in Ponce?

    I think that is better move that being a seargent in the PR police force!

    You know that you will need to study hard for the bar, and if you don't pass the first time, don't give up until you pass it.

    Suerte compa! De corazón!

    Vinipink,

    You are right I did not do appropriate due diligence and find out that the other two universities were RA, I apologize for jumping to conclusions both to you and to Police.

    I do know Puerto Rico does have some different laws from the US regarding the Notary Public designation. In fact in Florida it is illegal to translate the term Notary Public into Notorio Publico as that connotates 'lawyer' in many countires. I know in Mexico it means an advanced type of lawyer with special authorizations to preform official real estate transactions. Rathern than being an attorney in Florida to be a notary public you have to have $70 to mail in with a form.

    I also know that the green flashing lights on the police cars mean municipal police rather than State or Federal. Very odd green and blue flashing lights, quite decorative, too decorative to give me a ticket I hope.

    I certainly hope Police choose wisely, and selected an ABA school. If his BS an MA are an indication he probably did.

    And remember JFK Jr. took the bar multiple times before he passed it.

    Is there such thing as "Federal Police" in Puerto Rico? I assumed that since P.R. is a Commonwealth of the United States, their Federal government would be the U.S. government, which has no national police force.

    Technically there is no national police force, however when I said Federal I said it with the understanding that the various executive departments with law enforcement responsibilities would be understood.
    I am sure that everyone knows that the FBI, ATF, NOAA,FDA, DEA, DHS, USPS, USParksService, BOP, USFWS, TREAS,VA,DOS.... hmm that is all I can think of I am sure more can be added, but with DHS taking everything over I can't tell the players w/o a program.

    Speaking of PR. I have some Hawaiian money and they let me spend it in Puerto Rico !

    Hi friends, hola Vinipink, hace tiempo que no te veía en el forum.

    I was admitted to La Facultad de Derecho Eugenio María de Hostos. (http://www.hostos.edu)

    The Law School is not accredited by ABA, they are in process to have the accreditation, (they should have the accreditation to the 2007) but the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico supervise the university, and authorize the graduates to take the State Exam. This authorization comes from jurisprudence; see this, 2003 DTS 110 IN RE: FUNDACION FACULTAD DE DERECHO EMH 2003TSPR110 EN EL TRIBUNAL SUPREMO DE PUERTO RICO (http://www.lexjuris.com/).

    Bruce,

    Puerto Rico has a police force like a State Police; the name is Policía de Puerto Rico. However, all the municipalities can create a Municipal Police. I work in the Policía Municipal the San Juan, the capital police force, and yes, we use decorative green and blue flashing lights on the police cars. The commonwealth police force, only use blue flashing lights on the police cars.

    The degrees;

    The BA and the MA are accredited, the PhD no, but in PR, I can use that degree. We have a decision of the Secretario de Justicia (Like the District Attorney) that said that if an institution operates with a state license (degree granting institution) the degree could be used in Puerto Rico.

    Vinipink;

    No se si lo sabias, pero en Puerto Rico puedes usar tus títulos, ya que han sido conferidos legalmente por una institución licenciada en su Estado.

    La decisión del Secretario de Justicia dice así “Las personas con cualificaciones mediante títulos, diplomas, certificados o cursos obtenidos de instituciones privadas que operan bajo licencias de autorización pueden ser empleadas por cualquier agencia.” Op.Sec. Just. Num. 1 de 1979:D
