When I was nominated to join Upsilon Pi Epsilon I didn't think twice -- I joined since UPE is the honor society for my field, Computer Science. Today I received an invitation to join Phi Sigma Theta, but other than taking my $50 I don't really see what they offer. Am I wrong for think that most honor societies are a bunch of bunk? The fact that they would ask me to join can't say much for them!

I was a member and President of Phi Theta Kappa during nursing school. It was a active honor society on campus and we did several campus wide projects. My son, however, has been invited to join 3 honor societies in college, non of whom have any activities on campus. Other than showing it on a resume I see no reason to shell out 100.00+ a piece to them. I think some of these societies get lists from the schools and just blanket mail the invitations. Not sure who they are trying to help other than themselves.
