I was talking by phone yesterday to a regular here, whom I've never met in person, and the notion of a DegreeInfo convention arose. Maybe two days of talks, workshops, round table discussions, socializing, hand-to-hand combat, whatever. Maybe one day focusing on the real stuff and one day on the fake. Would anyone come? Well he would and I would, for starters. Let's raise hands. One can choose multiple options in the poll.

Indeed! Perhaps a bit of hand-to-hand combat between the shills and the regulars would be in order.

Where is Bruce Tait? Bruce, could you bring some of the department's riot gear? ;)

    Winter, Vegas, just hang out.

It will be interesting to see if any trolls show up and try to disguise themselves. :D

    Great Idea

For me it would be awesome to meet you all . I am not sure I'll be able to travel to the States even though it'd be great. Perhaps you shoud do something like the Olimpic games: meeting one time in America, next time in Europe.... and so on.

BTW Las Vegas sounds like a lot of additional fun too......

Can we mix it up a bit?

Sounds great, but can I go?
Maybe we could rent a banquet room and have a boxing ring installed...just in case some people want to mix it up a bit. You know, open up a can of whoop ass! lol. :)
Just for kicks we could take a field trip to some of our favorite accrediting agencies located in Nevada.

DL is not for the faint of heart.

On a serious note, I'd be honored to meet a number of the esteemed gentleman and ladies who frequently post on this site.
And as a man who works at casinos, I bet I could get us the hook up when it comes to a number of properties in Vegas or Cali.

    When & Where?

For me, attending would depend when and where the gathering is held.
Naturally, we'll be issued name-tags for the convention, which we'll affix to our chest. My name tag will continue to read "me again" so I can remain anonymous. :D ;)

Winter in Vegas sounds good. Yes Rich, I'll dip my head in a bucket of "white out" and come as Richard Hoyer.

But Michael, you're not a troll. You're very open and honest about your takes regarding this subject. A lot of people jump on your posts, but that's because you take a stance many disagree with. Not the same at all.

I buy you a beer. Heck, I'd even spring for one of those 99-cents shrimp cocktails Vegas is famous for. :D

It sounds like fun. I'd likely go if it were in Las Vegas, the SF bay area, or Southern CA.

I guess we go national and then move up to regional?

I still haven't voted in the poll, but...

Yes, I've had a chance to think about it -- and it does sound fun. The first meeting would be a memorable one. And subsequent annual meetings would probably grow, what with advertisers wanting to get involved and DL universities wanting to spout their wares...

But the very first meeting would be the most memorable.

    This leads to several questions:
    • What would be our objective or goal(s)?
    • Advertising for DL schools?
    • Friendship? :D
    • Self-glory (I'm anon, so count me out on this one)?
    • Money (which reminds me, what happened to the Romanian story)?
    • Curiosity?
    • All of the above?

Re: I still haven't voted in the poll, but...

I think some face-to-face contact will build a stronger bond within the community. When we differ, it will likely change the tone of those disagreements. And when we agree, we'll be more likely to express it in print.

I'll go wherever we hold it. And whenever.

Living in Virginia, I'd have to agree. But without a choice on the East Coast, I'd still prefer Vegas. (I lived there for about 5 years and know where to eat/drink.)

I used to belong to a real estate investment board who started doing meetings like this. They have been a big success. They rotate their meetings 3 times a year, east coast, middle states and west coast. For people really into their topics it is a great way to meet and discuss ideas.

    Would need to be summer

People with kids couldn't travel otherwise. In the midwest so it is central.

    It's a great idea.

It’s a superb idea. I reside in the East Coast but my venue preferences will not be spurred by geographical propinquity. I hope that the assemblage will effectuate the denudation of "me again" and several other anonymous cyber personalities. If it ever takes place, my presence will be definitely assured.

I attended only one of the meetings that I referred to above. I can say that meeting people face to face had a deflating effect on some of the people who had posted previously in unflattering/condescending ways to others on that board. They became much more, I guess 'kind', in their general postings. There is something about the anonymity of public boards that cause some people to be a little caustic in their comments. This was just an observation of mine pertaining to that board. This is not an accusation toward anyone here. It was an interesting observation that others noticed too. I think it made the general atmosphere at the investment board better. There was a sense of community that had been lacking before the meetings began.
