In looking for a thesis on the Naval Postgraduate School website I noticed that some of the theses and dissertations are classified or limited (hence not available to general publc). This reminded me of an article in Time magazine many years ago about Los Alamos scientists who had classified secret PhDs from UC California (UC California runs the Los Alamos National Laboratories).

I have also assumed that when a person does their dissertation on a topic related to their company's business, and especially if the company is footing the bill, the company can request/demand that the dissertation become "classified" as it contains information that is proprietary. (Would that be the correct term?)

Dissertation, heck I did some research in steganography that did not involve DOD, or any other government agency which was for a directed research class for my MS that was not directed by anyone who was working on anything classified and the stuff was removed from a public server.
I can't find out why it was removed because that is classified. However I was asked if it was OK for them to provide copies of my work to some other group that was doing classified work. Sure, just give me a groovy government job where I can research and get paid.

No one ever asked me not to give out copies of my work to anyone though. Very odd.
