Do you think it is possible for a Director or CEO to consider their own successor??

    Pondering questions here!!!

My father is a retired banker, and he was lured away from one bank to another with the title of Executive Vice-President and the promise that when the current President either retired or died, he would become President (this proviso was forcefully supported by the current President). About a year after being hired by the new bank, the President died suddenly, and my father was made President & CEO almost immediately.

So, yes, it's not only possible, but it's also happened at least once.

    Good morning!

There is a significant body of literature devoted to the topic of succession planning, and there are also many consulting firms that offer services in this field. From a family-owned SME to a Fortune 500 company, there are appropriate steps to take in planning for the future.

Are you looking for a specific area of succession planning or a particular sector?

    Succession planning or baton passing

The area I am looking at particularly is succession planning within the voluntary sector, and if I can be more specific within Christian organisations.

I wonder sometimes if it is a hard thing to ask some Founders - or whether it is more to do with timing.

I am more interested in Founder succession than general Directors/CEO moving on though the later still has bearing on the subject.

Any authors you'd particularly recommend or directors who might be interested in talking further with me??

Um, I'm far from being the world's best (or indeed any kind of) Christian, but didn't somebody once say "That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I shall build my church"?

I'm not taking His words in vain to imply that this is an indication of succession. As far as I'm aware, the whole principle of the Apostolic Succession of the Popes (and the Anglican Church, but Tommy Cranmer and the Marian Church are a different kettle of fish (I was going to say can of Worms, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it ;-)) rests upon that passage.

If he can bethink himself of such matters, it's not the worst example for the rest of humanity.

And come to that, there has got to be some kind of Christian Exemplars of Management book out there that goes into this kind of thing?

Speaking from inside the can of Worms, most Lutherans (and no real gutbucket ones) give a rip for the 'apostolic succession'.
