    Hi Everone,

I am new to usage of Credit Card. I used it just to buy books from Amazon. Now i got to submit mine fees to ECE for evaluation of mine credentials, they have a printed form on which for paying fees we got to write Credit Card number and send it by post. Do you people think, this method is secure ? Sumbitting Credit card on good sites can be no problem as they encrypt as you submit. But writing off and sending credit card number in printed forms ???? Did you people submitted to ECE or someone else in this way & how it works ?

    Avoiding credit card fraud

Hi. Well, I have to be the voice of warning, here.

First, let me say that I often buy online. And I've only been the victim of credit card fraud once. That's pretty good, I think, considering.

At any rate, I was up late last night watching a show on fraud, on the number of ways people steal credit card numbers. One way is to send the user a fake email. The example they used was Amazon.com.

It doesn't take a lot of work to create an HTML email message that looks like a legitimate Amazon.com message. Clicking on the link takes the user to a fake Amazon webpage, and the user just types in his user name and password as usual. Totally unsuspecting.

But he's just given it away to the bad guys. And they can then steal credit card numbers.

Other things people can do -- they can swipe your card twice at a retail outlet -- once legitimately, and once in a terminal that stores your card number, expiration date, bank name -- all they need to charge whatever they want. Even creating a fake card with your number on it.

I would suggest perhaps having one credit card that you use solely for school-related expenses. That way you can track your usage carefully.

You could also talk to your bank and let them know that only certain purchases are to be authorized. How helpful that could be will probably depend on the bank. I had to call my bank once and authorize an item I ordered that was not sent to my home address/billing address. So my guess here is that if you live in Italy, you could talk to your bank about only allowing charges from the US from one particular school, and only for x amount.

Are there ways around using a credit card? What about using yor credit card to buy a money order or traveler's checks? I admit, I feel uncomfortable using a credit card in a country in which I am not currently living or traveling myself. Crooks might feel that you're too far away to get back at them, and then there's the question of jurisdiction.

As I said, I shop online very often. I don't worry about it too much. But I do think it's prudent to display a certain caution and to build good safety habits -- especially when first starting to use credit cards.
