I have no plans to change my eating habits, unless this bse thing turns out to be a lot more widespread. But if it does, or even if leads to an unnecessary meat-panic, the results could be pretty devastating to the entire food industry. I really hope that it doesn't get to the point that it did in Britain, with wholesale cattle slaughter. But they will have to do what they have to do to stop it.
It bothers me that the recall on the meat was voluntary and initiated by the farmer. The head of the USDA--Ann Venable, I think is her name--says it's perfectly okay to eat animals infected with bse as long as you don't eat the brain and spinal column. I don't buy it.
That is why I am a vegetarian, I have never heard of recall or panic on sprouts!! The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its animals are treated- Mahatma Gandhi
Still gotta watch those veggies too...think about those onions from Mexico that were the source of the hepatitis A outbreak recently in Tennessee, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. Ron Consumer Safety Inspector USDA, Food Safety and Inspection Service
