Can anyone suggest a commercial source that can hard bind a thesis?
(My last thesis was submitted electronically)

I know a guy who runs a local printing shop who'll do anything you ask (within reason, of course). I don't know why your local printer can't do the same. Beyond that, I had my favorite dictionary (Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary, 1961) rebound a couple of years ago. There's lots of places that will do that too. I got mine done in leather. For a few bucks extra it seemed worth it.

I had my master's dissertation bound by Kinko's. They had to send it away for about a week and a half. However, they provided a sharp-looking finished product.

Office Depot also does binding, at a rather minimal cost.
