I remember being surprised, in reading that fine John McPhee book about the Pine Barrens, how many bears live in New Jersey, even under the interstate overpasses. Long ago when we had a retail candy-ice cream store in California, we had two buckets of buttons by the cash register at 25 cents each: "Support the right to bear arms," and "Support the right to arm bears." We posted a daily tally of amounts sold. "Arm bears" generally was about a 2 to 1 favorite.
