Whatever happens in Louisiana today will make state history. The gubernatorial runoff pits a woman against an Indian-American. As one having grown up in New Orleans and having witnessed discrimination and hatred, this is a grand day for the Pelican State.
Yes, this is a huge improvement for Louisiana politics, in which the 1992 gubernatorial race featured a convicted felon (who also happened to be a former governor) vs. a grand wizard of the KKK. "I'm For The Crook" bumper stickers were quite popular that year. The crook won. Edwin Edwards defeated David Duke, the grand wizard. During his term from 92-96, Edwards' biggest accomplishment was ramming through the passage of a bill allowing land-based casinos in the state. Unless, of course, you include not getting indicted again. That was a pretty big accomplishment.
I tend to judge the value of a candidate based on their intellect, integrity and ability; not on gender or race. I would say that it will be a great day for the Pelican State and an "improvement" in Louisiana politics if the victor demonstrates professional competance and honour in performing their duties as Governor.
All seek office with integrity and conviction, once elected they become corruptible. One should seek office as a politician and serve as a statesman(or stateswoman) and to hell with partisan politics. Long live the independent free thinker and voter.
