Just another news article featuring the latest hijinx of our old friend Asmal. http://www.themercury.co.za/index.php?fSectionId=282&fArticleId=276237 Jack
OK, here's another article about more problems at the University of Durban-Westville: http://www.witness.co.za/content/2003_11/19507.htm Jack
OK, OK, I know that not many are interested, but for those who are . . . here's the next installment of the story. http://www.witness.co.za/content/2003_11/19547.htm Jack
Aw c'mon, I'm interested--appalled, too. Whatever the hell was it that supposedly qualified Saths Cooper to run a university? The endless coverup, the negation of reports, the random interference of Asmal--or maybe not-so-random, and the idiotic inability to come up with a name for the merged university: you know what, my china, as Paddy Bauler once said of Chicago, Durban "ain't ready for reform yet." Of course, we won't even mention the nasty ethnic/racial politics of all this--except to say that when the dust clears, the NU component will have done a damn sight more to enfranchise rural and township blacks than UDW will have done.
Will this be the final installment of this story? Don't bet on it. http://www.witness.co.za/Content/2003_11/19609.htm Jack
Other than creating confusion with the University of Zululand (such as it is), the new name is at least geographically intelligible.
OK, same issue, different newspaper . . . http://www.themercury.co.za/index.php?fSectionID=282&fArticleId=281402 and http://www.themercury.co.za/index.php?fSectionId=282&fArticleId=281350 Jack
Here's another related story from Durban-Westville. http://www.witness.co.za/content/2003_12/20355.htm Jack
I'm sorry, I'm looking for a 12-step program related to this story, but in the meantime . . . I just can't stop . . . http://www.witness.co.za/content/2003_12/20385.htm Jack
Thanks Uncle . . . here's the next installment. http:www.themercury.co.za/index.php?fSectionId=282&fArticleId=307650 Jack (please note the UNISA reference at the end of the article)
I believe that step #1 is related to the admission of powerlessness. I seem unable to let go of this story. (that is, until the next one comes along) Jack
Eventually, you're going to get to the step where you have to apologize to everyone who has been effected by your addiction....us.
more UDW hijinx Not directly related to the previous stories although it does continue to paint a picture of life on the UDW campus. http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?click_id=13&art_id=vn20040109133738955c337445&set_id=1 Jack
sausage university gets curried away Wow, Jack, thanks for another "there but for the grace of God go I" moment. I was thiiiiis close to going into a program at UDW... Whew. As mal as they are, they keep getting wors.
It sailed across the ocean to land on Durban's shore, a curried imbecility brought fresh from Bangalore: It's cronyism zindabad, it's cronyism jai, attention new South Africa--this thumb is in your eye. The summer is past, the harvest is over, and we are not saved.
Janko has hit the nail on the head. It's simply cronyism, for a person considered a liberation hero. Tshabalala-Msimang will be in the history books as a fool whose incompetence caused the death of hundreds of thousands.
