Many of the updates that I've been able to gather regarding the South African university merger have come from the Mail and Guardian newspaper. It seems that theonline version of the paper will no longer be completely free. As of ?today there is a paid subscription fee for access to most of the news stories. As I find myself to be presently somewhat financially embarrassed (more or less a permanent state - after all, I am a Social Worker ;) ) I will not be subscribing. If any forum members decide to subscribe I would appreciate any updates you might provide from this source.

    Greetings.

    First an unsolicited opinion:
I suspect that the Guardian & Mail (www.mg.co.za/) chaps are a bit more "financially embarrassed" than you are, and that your twenty bucks semi-anually would do more good in their pocket than yours (www.mg.co.za/Content/l3_f.asp?a=18&o=10298). Come on, be a sport! <g>

    Now some questions:
Might anyone (perhaps you, Mr. Tracey?) be able to sort out South Africa's newspapers for me? That is, which is conservative, which is communist, which paper has "the classified section" (i.e. the classified section any job seeker, house hunter, etc. will turn to first; e.g. The NY Times in NYC), which has the best world coverage, etc.

    Cordially,

I'm afraid that I can not offer much in the way of analysis but I'm happy to assist with a bit of access (although I expect that Richard already has his own listing). You can get started reading South African newspapers by following this link:

A listing of independent newspapers can be found here (scroll a bit):

Other interesting sources of information can be found here:

Hi Jack: IOL is free and is not antisemitic like M&G. You can also get the Natal Witness for free. News24.co.za (sorry no url) will also get you access to Die Burger and Volksblad. Business Report (weekly) is also available free.

Hello Uncle - Thanks for your suggestions. I'm sorry to report, however, that News24 and subsequently Die Burger as well as Volksblad have also succumbed to the Kudu Club subscription service and are no longer free. In any case, Die Burger and Volksblad are , IIRC, strictly Afrikaans newspapers and so are inaccessible to a poorly educated one such as myself who has, somehow, neglected to learn the Afrikaan language. It seems, however, that you might be a candidate to answer Richards question as he stated it in his original posting in this thread.

I've got too much stuff "under negotiation", so somebody else better do this one. Sorry to hear about the news24 going to pay. I guess IOL is it, then, plus businessreport.

Jacko: When you have the time, and if you have the inclination <g>, substantiation of your charge of antisemitism against M&G, as well as any other suggestions you might have for an American with a (weak) desire to learn more about SA, would be appreciated.

    Hi Richard:

Too many Israelis-as-Nazis cartoons, always giving terrorist organizations (outside SA) a pass, lots of stray comments, and, yes, I know the cartoonist's real name is Shapiro (Selbsthass strikes again!). After 35 years studying European antisemitism, it's a bit like porn: I know it when I see it.

That's not chapter and verse (urls), and you're of course free to accept or reject my characterisation of M&G. It took several months of reading it daily for this to come clear for me.

How to get familiar? Get IOL and Business Report or businessreport, whichever it is, and read the suckers every day. Follow up the links on IOL--lots and lots of archived stuff. Somebody suggested allafrica.com--it's very good, too. There are also some live stream or whatever you call it radio stations from SA you can scare up on the internet. Do a google to find em--that's been some time since I listened to any of that.

    Best wishes, Janko
