I guess I should have known! I did some googling and could not find any such article, or info on Dr. Bear.

Boy it's tough typing into my Commodore PET in this cold dark cell.

    What tedious nonsense.

And the only Atlantic Sun I can find is a purely sports publication.

Those "articles" written about Dr. Bear appear to be nothing but HORSECRAP . I tried to email the "Author" in one of the alleged articles with several questions about sources but the listed email link bounced.

it's really a badge of honor

That "20 years for Dr. Bear" lunacy continues. There is another post, this time from "Jack Dixon" at http://www.online-college.info/article1402.html . Mr. "Dixon" has been a busy fellow: he has been posting similar messages to alt.education.distance.

I think this is a rather impressive badge of honor for Dr. Bear: some turkey-mother took the time to fake up email from Chip White, craft an entirely bogus (but nicely written) article from an entirely imaginary newspaper, lie through his teeth (oops-- beak--) about court testimony, then pump nine copies of his stuff into a newsgroup.

Something that confuses me, though: what is a "hard-eared... PhD"? Hard-nosed is an adjective I've seen before (just not used to modify "PhD"). But hard-eared?

Will no one rid me of this troublesome news group?

It seems to me that alt.education.distance is once again a terrible place. Not only unmoderated, but also, through Google Groups, appearing in many other places.

Let's set the ethics over there in the corner, just for the sake of this discussion.

Is there any way a news group can ever go away? I seem to remember, three years ago, when things were especially evil over there (leading Chip and colleagues to start DegreeInfo), there was something said about the founder of a news group being the only person who could kill it.

Is this so, or is there some entity that one can appeal to? Or is a legal action against the founder* even worth thinking about? Or do news groups literally go on forever?

    Just wondering.

    Thanks.

    John

    * I seem to recall that it was a man who had some sort of connection with American Coastline University, which later had a connection with the man who appears to be behind Saint Regis and other so-called schools.

So...I clicked on the 'stripes' link pointing to Dr. Bear's homepage and noticed the advertising links (undoubtedly supplied by tripod, based on content of the good doctor's site) at the bottom of the page. ACCIS and K-W ads stuck out ironically. Perhaps it is time to upgrade from a free site, lest anyone get the wrong impression? ;)

Edit: Add (or is that ad?) Lexington, Trinity, and many other 'schools' who would rather pump money into advertising than into their 'schools', to the list.

Oh my. What an embarrassment. Thanks for the heads up. It is surely worth six bucks a month to keep that from happening.

Re: Will no one rid me of this troublesome news group?

I don't believe that there is a way to kill a newsgroup, at lest in the "alt" hierarchy. But even if you could, it would be a trivial matter to re-create it.

It reminds me of a book -- "The Magic City," I believe -- in which you could have anything you wanted, but once you had it, it was there forever.
