  1. The late great David Ogilvy was given such a degree by Colby College.

I just read this in "Blood, Brains and Beer: The Autobiography of David Ogilvy."

I'd never head of such a degree.

"AMBASSADOR SEIPLE SPEAKS AT COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY,
    RECEIVES HONORARY DEGREE

WASHINGTON -- Ambassador Robert Seiple spoke at the American Public University System commencement ceremony June 21 and received an honorary Master of Arts degree in Global Engagement."

The awarding of honorary M.A.s seems to make sense for institutions where the M.A. is the highest earned degree awarded.

  3. Rhema Bible Training Center, a Tulsa, Okla.-based school founded by the late Kenneth Hagin, has been known to hand out honorary certificates of graduation.

When I first heard it, I thought it was odd. But the school doesn't offer degrees. Only certificates. Guess they're simply presenting their highest credential.

  4. Or said another way:

Mr. Ripley, believe it or not, had an honorary MA.:)

Ok. So it's corny. But it was funny to me.:D

Mr. Ripley from Ripley's Believe It or Not fame had an honorary MA. I saw the diploma on display at the Florida Ripley museum about 9 years ago. If memory serves correct it was from Dartmouth.

British Universities frequently give honourary MAs to people they wish to, uhm, honour who do not already hold the BA. The ice skaters Torvill and Dean each were given honourary MAs in the late 80s or early 90s by the University of Nottingham, in their hometown.

The only doctorates grated by my undergraduate institution and my current employer are honorary.

A few years ago, I heard that Santa Monica College awarded an honorary degree to Dustin Hoffman who enrolled, but never completed his associate's degree.

Since SMC is a community college, did Hoffman get an honorary A.A.?

  8. Good question. Although I have read somewhere that any school or even a business can offer honorary doctorates. I'm wondering if it was Ric Walston who said it in his book.
