I live in Florida and the community colleges as well as the senior colleges require 18 grad credits to teach a topic.

    Is this standard?

Every faculty position I've seen advertised (for RA schools) for an undergrad adjunct job require, at a minimum, a Master's degree in the field of study, or a general Master's (M.L.A., etc.) with 18 hours in the field of study, or a Master's in another field, but with significant real-world experience in the field of study.

    18 graduate-level credits...

    As I understand it...

The 18-credit requirement is from the regional accreditors and it is not from the individual states. It is a common standard amongst the six regional accreditors.

So does this mean that once my MBA is done, I could just take 18 credits in a subject such as history, English, or art and then teach that subject as an adjunct? Also, on the subject of an MBA, since the degree is interdisciplinary in nature (you take finance, econ, management, accounting, etc), what does an MBA really qualify you to teach since it seems like a large number of programs do not reach the 18 credit mark in any one area?

In this case, you would meet the minimum standard required by the RA bodies. Some schools have additional requirements. Some don't. At my local community college, one only has to meet the minimum SACS requirements to become an adjunct. In fact, the college's policies give the hiring committees little discretion. If someone meets the requirements and does a satisfactory job in a brief teaching demonstration, they are added to the adjunct list.

This is a gray area. With an MBA, some schools may allow you to teach in any of the areas you mentioned. Some may be very strict about the 18 hour rule. The RA bodies don't really define this well, and their evaluation of faculty credentials often varies depending upon the views of the members of the site visit team.
